Mega Spileo Railway Station
Mega Spileo railway station ( el, Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός Ζαχλωρούς-Μεγάλου Σπηλαίου, Sidirodromikós Stathmós Zachlorus-Megalou Spilaiou) is a station in Kato Zachlorou, Achaea, Greece. It was opened on 10 March 1896. The station is served by the Diakopto–Kalavryta railway a rack railway (known locally as the 'Cogwheel' or 'Toothache'). The station serves visitors of the monastery of the Great Cave. History The Station opened on 10 March 1896, on what was a branch line of the Piraeus, Athens & Peloponnese Railways (SPAP) when the gauge line was completed in 1895. The line opened under the government of Theodoros Diligiannis however, work had been begun by the Charilaos Trikoupis government, under the grand project of connecting all of Greece by rail. Kato Zachlorou
Kato Zachlorou ( el, Κάτω Ζαχλωρού) is a village and a community in eastern Achaea, Greece. It is built on a mountain slope on the left bank of the river Vouraikos, which forms a narrow gorge. The community consists of the villages Kato Zachlorou and Ano Zachlorou, and the Mega Spilaio monastery. It is south of Diakopto, and northeast of Kalavryta. In 2011 Kato Zachlorou had a population of 38 for the village, and 53 for the community. The narrow gauge Diakofto–Kalavryta Railway runs through the village. Kalavryta ( el, Καλάβρυτα) is a town and a municipality in the mountainous east-central part of the regional unit of Achaea, Greece. The town is located on the right bank of the river Vouraikos, south of Aigio, southeast of Patras and northwest of Tripoli. Diakopto
Diakopto ( el, Διακοπτό) is a coastal town municipality in Achaea, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reforms it is a municipal unit of the Aigialeia municipality. The municipal unit has an area of 103.932 km2. Population 6,429 (2011). The town of Diakopto is situated on the Gulf of Corinth, near the mouth of the Vouraikos river and at the lower end of the Vouraikos Gorge. The gauge Diakofto–Kalavryta Railway built in 1885 leads up to the town of Kalavryta passing the Mega Spilaio Monastery at about halfway.
