Medusa (Clan Of Xymox Album)
''Medusa'' is the second studio album by Dutch dark wave band Clan of Xymox. It was released on 1 November 1986 by 4AD. Founding member Pieter Nooten re-recorded the songs "After the Call" and "Theme I" on ''Sleeps with the Fishes'', his 1987 collaborative album with Michael Brook, following a brief split from the band. Critical reception ''Medusa'' is seen by some critics as the group's career high point. ''Sounds'' described ''Medusa'' as an "overriding achievement ..every track sounds like the finale to a brooding epic overture". Clan Of Xymox
Clan of Xymox, also known as simply Xymox, are a Dutch rock band from Nijmegen formed in 1981 best known as pioneers of darkwave music. Clan of Xymox featured a trio of singers and songwriters – Ronny Moorings, Anka Wolbert, and Pieter Nooten – and gained success in the 1980s, releasing their first two albums on 4AD, before releasing their third and fourth albums on Wing Records and scoring a hit single in the United States. Their 1980s releases included synthpop/ electronic dance music. The band is still active, continuing to tour and release records with Moorings as the sole remaining original songwriter and singer. ''Sounds'' was a UK weekly pop/rock music newspaper, published from 10 October 1970 to 6 April 1991. It was known for giving away posters in the centre of the paper (initially black and white, then colour from late 1971) and later for covering heavy metal (especially the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM)) and punk and Oi! music in its late 1970s–early 1980s heyday. 4AD Albums
4AD is a British record label owned by Beggars Group. It was founded in London under the name "Axis" (after the Hendrix album) by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent in 1980 as an imprint of Beggars Banquet Records. The name was changed to 4AD after the release of the label's first four singles. Later that year, Watts-Russell and Kent purchased the label from Beggars Banquet to become an independent record label, and Kent sold his share to Watts-Russell a year later. The label gained prominence in the 1980s for releasing albums from alternative rock, post-punk, gothic rock, and dream pop artists, such as Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Belly and Watts-Russell's own musical project This Mortal Coil. Darkness, the direct opposite of lightness, is defined as a lack of lighting, illumination, an absence of visible spectrum, visible light, or a surface that absorbs light, such as black or brown. Vaughan Oliver
Vaughan Oliver (12 September 1957 – 29 December 2019) was a British graphic designer based in Epsom, Surrey. Oliver was best known for his work with graphic design studios 23 Envelope and v23. Both studios maintained a close relationship with record label 4AD between 1982 and 1998 and gave distinct visual identities for the 4AD releases by many bands, including Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pale Saints, Pixies, and Throwing Muses. Oliver also designed record sleeves for such artists as David Sylvian, The Golden Palominos, and Bush. A book collecting his work, ''Vaughan Oliver: Archive,'' was published in 2018. Anka Wolbert
Anka Wolbert (also Anke Wolbert, born 10 June 1963) is a Dutch musician, singer, songwriter and web developer, best known for her work with Clan of Xymox. Music career Xymox, Clan of Xymox Anka Wolbert co-founded the band Xymox with Ronny Moorings in 1981, self-publishing their first mini-album '' Subsequent Pleasures'' in 1983. Pieter Nooten joined the band as third songwriter shortly after this release. With the name Xymox lengthened to Clan of Xymox, they signed a recording contract with independent UK label 4AD and released their eponymous debut album ''Clan of Xymox'' in 1985. Ronny Moorings
Ronny Moorings (born 20 May 1961) is a Dutch musician best known for his work with darkwave band Clan of Xymox. Moorings has been the band's principal singer/songwriter since the early 1990s. Music career With Clan of Xymox on 4AD While a sociology student in Nijmegen, Netherlands in 1981, Moorings met fellow musician and graphic designer Anka Wolbert who shared a similar taste in new wave music. In 1983 they recorded a five track EP entitled ''Subsequent Pleasures'' and gave a copy to Brendan Perry after a chance encounter in an Amsterdam restaurant. Perry invited the pair to perform as the opening act for the inaugural UK tour of his project, Dead Can Dance, in 1984. Also while in Amsterdam, Moorings and Wolbert met fellow musician Pieter Nooten, who contributed several tracks of his own, making Xymox a trio. ''Melody Maker'' was a British weekly music magazine, one of the world's earliest music weeklies; according to its publisher, IPC Media, the earliest. It was founded in 1926, largely as a magazine for dance band musicians, by Leicester-born composer, publisher Lawrence Wright; the first editor was Edgar Jackson. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences.
