The Corsair
''The Corsair'' (1814) is a long tale in verse written by Lord Byron (see 1814 in poetry) and published by John Murray in London. It was extremely popular, selling ten thousand copies on its first day of sale, and was influential throughout the following century, inspiring operas, music and ballet. The 180-page work was dedicated to Irish poet Thomas Moore. Background The poetry, divided into cantos (like Dante's ''Divine Comedy''), narrates the story of the corsair or privateer Conrad. It says that in his youth he was rejected by society because of his acts and his later war against humanity (excepting women). In this 180-page tale, the figure of the Byronic hero emerges, "that man of loneliness and mystery", who perceives himself a "villain", an anti-hero. The long poem was adapted for or inspired numerous other works in a variety of genres: the grand opera ''The Pacha's Bridal'' (1836), with music by Francis Romer and a libretto by Mark Lemon; the opera ''Il corsaro'' (184 ...

Il Corsaro
''Il corsaro'' (''The Corsair'') is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, from a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Lord Byron's 1814 poem ''The Corsair''. The first performance was given at the Teatro Grande in Trieste on 25 October 1848. Composition history The composer expressed interest in Byron's poem ''The Corsair'' (along with ''The Two Foscari'' and others) as early as 1844 when he was planning an opera for Venice, but a suitable baritone was not available.Budden, pp. 363 – 366 In 1845, (before it was determined that ''I masnadieri'' was to be the opera presented in London), the composer had contracted with the Milanese publisher, Francesco Lucca, for three operas, including ''Attila'' and one for London. Three things prevented it from being ''I masnadieri'' at that time: firstly, Verdi's illness postponed any opera for London for almost a year; secondly, he demanded that the work be ''Il corsaro'' and that it be written by Piave, who had begun work; and, ...

Elizabeth Medora Leigh
Elizabeth Medora Leigh (15 April 1814 – 28 August 1849) was the third daughter of Augusta Leigh. It is widely speculated that she was fathered by her mother's half-brother Lord Byron, although her mother's husband Colonel George Leigh was her official father. Birth She was born as the middle child of seven children. Three days after her birth, Byron visited Augusta and the baby. He later wrote to a friend, Lady Melbourne: "Oh! but it is 'worth while' – I can't tell you why – and it is not an ''Ape'' and if it is – that must be my fault." The child's middle name was taken from the heroine of Byron's poem ''The Corsair.'' In the family, she was known as Elizabeth or "Libby", but she also later used the name Medora. In 1816, the scandal over his separation from his wife Annabella, rumours surrounding his relationship with Augusta, and mounting debts forced Byron to leave England. He never returned. Early life Augusta's husband, George, never questioned the paternity of ...
