Medal Of Courage
The Medal of Courage ( he, עיטור העוז, ''Itur HaOz'') is an Israeli military decoration. The medal is awarded for carrying out acts of gallantry at the risk of life, during combat duty. The medal was established in 1970 (though it has been given retroactively) by act of law in the Knesset. Design The medal was designed by Dan Reisinger, on the obverse there are six crossed swords and between them an olive branch. the reverse is the same. The medal is attached to a red ribbon symbolizing the fire and blood in battle. Officially, two time recipients of the medal wear a small clasp in the form of the medal on its ribbon. In practice, Rav Aluf Amnon Lipkin-Shahak (the only person to be awarded the medal twice whilst still alive) wore two ribbons. Shmuel Gonen
Shmuel "Gorodish" Gonen ( he, שמואל גונן; 1930 – 30 September 1991) was an Israeli general and Chief of the Southern Command of the Israel Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War. Early life Born in Vilna, Poland, Gonen immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine with his family at the age of three. He served in the Haganah at fourteen, and participated in the battles over Jerusalem in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, being wounded five times. After the war, he remained in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), rising through the ranks of the Armored Corps. He commanded a tank company during the 1956 Sinai Campaign, and was awarded the Medal of Courage. He was later charged with overseeing the integration of the new Centurion tank into the IDF, and later commanded the first battalion composed of these tanks. Dov Tamari (brigadier General)
Dov Tamari ( he, דב תמרי; born 1936) was an Israeli military leader. He retired as a brigadier general. He held several prominent posts, including the IDF's Chief Intelligence Officer. Military service Tamari was drafted into the IDF in 1954. He volunteered as a paratrooper in the Paratroopers Brigade. He served as a soldier and a squad leader and took part in the Reprisal operations. In 1956 he became an infantry officer after completing Officer Candidate School and returned to the Paratroopers Brigade as a platoon leader. On 10 October 1956, during Operation Samaria, in which the Paratroopers Brigade attacked the Jordanian military stronghold in Qalqilya, Tamari's force was separated from the main force and came under heavy attack. Aluf (res.) Yossi Ben Hanan ( he, יוסי בן-חנן) was born in Jerusalem, Mandate for Palestine in 1945. His father, served as one of the top Haganah commanders in Jerusalem. During the Six-Day War Ben Hanan was a lieutenant, serving as the operations officer of the 7th Armored Brigade. He was featured on the cover of ''Life'' magazine after the war which showed him triumphantly clutching an AK-47 rifle, under the caption "Israeli soldier cools off in the Suez Canal". Yitzhak "Itzik" Mordechai ( he, יצחק מרדכי, born 22 November 1944) is an Israeli former general and politician. He served as a member of the Knesset between 1996 and 2001, and as Minister of Defense and Minister of Transport. He retired from political life after being indicted for sexual assaults during his military service and later periods. Amir Drori ( he, אמיר דרורי; 1937–2005) was an Israeli general, founder and the first director general of the Israel Antiquities Authority. Military career Amir Drori was born in Tel Aviv in 1937 and graduated from the IDF's Junior Command Preparatory School in Haifa. He was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in 1955, where he joined the Golani infantry brigade. During the 1956 Suez Crisis Drori led a demolition team and participated in fighting in Rafah and the Sinai. Roi Klein ( he, רועי קליין; ; (July 10, 1975—July 26, 2006) was an Israeli major in the Golani Brigade of the Israeli Defense Forces (and one of its most highly decorated soldiers) who died during the 2006 Lebanon War.
