Designed by Raymond Hood and J. André Fouilhoux in a mixture of the International Style, Art Deco, and Art Moderne styles, the building was constructed from 1930 to 1931 and originally served as the headquarters of McGraw-Hill Companies. The building contains 33 stories. The building's massing, or shape, consists of numerous setbacks on the 41st and 42nd Street sides, which were included to comply with the 1916 Zoning Resolution. The facade is made of blue-green terracotta ceramic tile panels, alternating with green-metal-framed windows, with a strongly horizontal orientation. 	1221 Avenue Of The Americas 1221 Avenue of the Americas (formerly also known as the McGraw-Hill Building) is an international-style skyscraper at 1221 Sixth Avenue, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The 51-floor structure has a seven-story base and a simple, cuboid massing. The facade has no decoration and consists of red granite piers alternating with glass stripes to underline the tower's verticality. The building is set back from Sixth Avenue, with a sunken courtyard dominated by ''Sun Triangle'', an abstract steel sculpture by Athelstan Spilhaus. The tower's lobby is clad in dark red terrazzo and red marble, with aphorisms by Plato and John F. Kennedy. Background The building was part of the later Rockefeller Center expansion (1960s–1970s) dubbed the "XYZ Buildings". Their plans were first drawn in 1963 by the Rockefeller family's architect, Wallace Harrison, of the architectural firm Harrison & Abramovitz. 	McGraw–Hill Building (Chicago) The McGraw–Hill Building was a 16-story, landmark building in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois, at 520 N. Michigan Avenue. The facade and its architectural sculpture by Chicago-born artist Gwen Lux were designated a Chicago Landmark on February 7, 1997. The building was demolished in 1998; however, its facade was saved and reinstalled in 2000 on the new Le Méridien Chicago hotel building. The hotel was renamed the Conrad Chicago in 2005. The hotel was again renamed in 2015, becoming The Gwen, for sculptor Gwen Lux, and is part of The Luxury Collection.
