In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Mesa ( ) is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, Maricopa County, in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is the most populous city in the East Valley (Phoenix metropolitan area), East Valley section of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Jedidiah Grant Peterson
Jedidiah Grant Peterson was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 9th Arizona State Legislature, holding one of the two seats from Maricopa County. He served several terms as the Mayor of Mesa, Arizona. He also held positions on the Arizona Highway Commission and the National Irrigation Congress, as well as being instrumental in the creation of the Roosevelt Dam. Biography Peterson was born on September 6, 1868, in Peterson, Utah, to Charles and Ann Peterson. He married Leah Elizabeth Metz in 1889. He was a member of the Woodsmen of the World, Knights of Pythias, and the Odd Fellows. Peterson was one of Arizona's delegates to the original National Irrigation Congress in 1891. He was mayor of Mesa, Arizona from 1900 to 1902. He was on the Roosevelt Dam Commission from 1901 to 1903, and played a principle role in getting the Roosevelt Dam constructed. George Nicholas Goodman
George Nicholas Goodman (September 5, 1895 – November 3, 1959), was a pharmacist in Mesa, Arizona. He was the mayor of Mesa for 5 different 2 year terms as part of 3 different decades. Goodman served as the executive secretary of the Arizona State Fair Commission at the time of his death, and was the former president of both the Arizona Pharmaceutical Association (now the Arizona Pharmacy Association) and the Arizona Municipal League (now the League of Arizona Cities and Towns). Background Goodman was born in St. David as the oldest of eight children. The family moved to Safford in 1904. June, 30, 1916 George married Clara Platt. Wayne Brown (American Politician)
Wayne Brown (November 16, 1936 – May 14, 2013) was an American politician and accountant. Brown served for two, two-year terms as the Mayor of Mesa, Arizona from 1996 to 2000. He spearheaded the movement to building the Mesa Arts Center in downtown Mesa, now the largest performing arts campus in Arizona. Biography Early life Brown was born on November 16, 1936, in Mesa, Arizona. He had a twin brother. Brown graduated from Mesa High School and received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Arizona State University. Career Brown served on the Mesa City Council from 1968 to 1976. Former Mesa Mayor Wayne Pomeroy, who served as mayor during the late 1970s, has credited Brown for planning the old Hohokam Park, beginning in 1976, during Brown's last year in office. Scott Smith (born 1956) is an American businessman and politician, elected as the 38th mayor of Mesa, Arizona, on May 20, 2008. He took office on June 2, 2008 and served until April 16, 2014, when he resigned to run for Governor of Arizona in the Republican Primary. John C. Giles (born 1960) is an American politician serving as the 40th mayor of Mesa, Arizona. A Republican, Giles previously served as a member of the Mesa City Council from 1996 to 2000. Giles was elected mayor of Mesa in a special election following the resignation of then-Mayor Scott Smith. In 2022, Giles was censured by the Arizona Republican Party over his endorsement of Mark Kelly in the 2022 United States Senate election. Early life and education Giles was born in Mesa, Arizona.
