May 2010 Sumatra Earthquake
The May 2010 Northern Sumatra earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 7.2 on May 9 at 12:59 PM local time (5:59 UTC) in Indonesia. The epicenter was 215 km from Banda Aceh on the northwestern tip of Sumatra. According to USGS, it is likely that this earthquake occurred along the interface of the Indo-Australia Plate and the Sunda Plate. It was one of a sequence of large earthquakes along the Sunda megathrust in 2000s. It was also felt in Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand. Broken windows and cracks in the walls were reported in the control tower at Cut Nyak Dhien Airport near Meulaboh. Moment Magnitude Scale
The moment magnitude scale (MMS; denoted explicitly with or Mw, and generally implied with use of a single M for magnitude) is a measure of an earthquake's magnitude ("size" or strength) based on its seismic moment. It was defined in a 1979 paper by Thomas C. Hanks and Hiroo Kanamori. Similar to the local magnitude scale, local magnitude/Richter scale () defined by Charles Francis Richter in 1935, it uses a logarithmic scale; small earthquakes have approximately the same magnitudes on both scales. Despite the difference, news media often says "Richter scale" when referring to the moment magnitude scale. Cut Nyak Dhien Airport (Indonesian language, Indonesian: ''Bandar Udara Cut Nyak Dhien'') is an airport located in Nagan Raya Regency, Aceh, Indonesia. The airport is located 26 kilometers from Suka Makmue, 46 kilometers from Meulaboh, West Aceh Regency, and 347 kilometers from the city of Banda Aceh. The airport serves both Suka Makmue the capital Nagan Raya Regency and Meulaboh the capital of West Aceh Regency. Meulaboh
Meulaboh (Jawi alphabet, Jawoë: ملابوه; or ''Moulabouh'') is the capital of West Aceh Regency, Indonesia. Geography Meulaboh is about 245 km southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province. Meulaboh is located in the western part of Sumatra island. 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake event "The casualty rates in Meulaboh defy imagination," said Aitor Lacomba, Indonesian director of aid group International Rescue Committee.
