Maxwell Chambers House
Maxwell Chambers House (also called Utzman-Chambers House) is a historic home located at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was built between 1814 and 1819, and is a two-story, three bay, Federal-style frame townhouse. It has three interior end chimneys and a one-story full-width shed roofed front porch with Doric order columns. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is located in the Salisbury Historic District. Cabinetmaker Lewis Utzman bought the site in 1814 from Charles Fisher for $100 and sold it to Judge James Martin for $1026 in 1819. It is believed the house was built for Utzman between these two dates, possibly by Jacob Utzman, who may have been a relative. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. Doric Order
The Doric order was one of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture; the other two canonical orders were the Ionic and the Corinthian. The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of columns. Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, it is the earliest and, in its essence, the simplest of the orders, though still with complex details in the entablature above. Salisbury Historic District is a national historic district located at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 348 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in the central business district and surrounding residential sections of Salisbury. Rowan Museum
The Rowan Museum is located in a 19th-century courthouse in Salisbury, North Carolina that survived Stoneman’s Raid. The building is considered to be one of the finest examples of antebellum architecture in North Carolina. The museum is dedicated to the history of Rowan County, North Carolina, Rowan County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, National Register of National Places in March 1970. The courthouse was built and completed by Conrad and Williams contractors between 1855 and 1857. The courthouse is a two-story building with a hexastyle colossal Doric portico along the front facade. Salisbury District, North Carolina
The Salisbury District of North Carolina, was originally one of six colonial judicial districts established in 1766 by the Governor William Tryon of the Province of North Carolina. Immediately preceding the onset of the American War of Independence in 1775, these six regions were renamed "Military districts" by the North Carolina Provincial Congress and used for organizing the North Carolina militia. The other districts were Edenton, Halifax, Hillsborough, New Bern, and Wilmington districts. The districts designation was discontinued in 1835 during the North Carolina Constitution Convention.
