Maunawili, Hawai'i
Maunawili () is a residential census-designated place (CDP) in the City & County of Honolulu, Koolaupoko District, Island of Oahu, Hawaii, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 2,026. Situated ''mauka'' (inland or mountain side) of Kalanianaole Highway between Castle Junction and Castle Hospital, Maunawili is nearly all private homes, schools, and a few churches; horse stables complete the rural setting. There are no commercial establishments. However, residents are only minutes (by car or bus) from Kailua. Maunawili Valley extends behind the prominent windward peak known as ''Olomana''. The residential developments extend only part way back into the valley, which is quite large and fairly wet, supporting limited agriculture (mostly banana growing) behind the housing. A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. CDPs are populated areas that generally include one officially designated but currently unincorporated community, for which the CDP is named, plus surrounding inhabited countryside of varying dimensions and, occasionally, other, smaller unincorporated communities as well. CDPs include small rural communities, edge cities, colonias located along the Mexico–United States border, and unincorporated resort and retirement communities and their environs.
