Vojtěch Matyáš Jírovec
Vojtěch Matyáš Jírovec (Adalbert Gyrowetz) (20 February 1763 – 19 March 1850) was a Bohemian composer. He mainly wrote instrumental works, with a great production of string quartets and symphonies; his operas and singspiele numbered more than 30, including ''Semiramide'' (1791), ''Der Augenarzt'' (1811), and ''Robert, oder Die Prüfung'' (1815). Biography Gyrowetz was born 20 February 1763 in České Budějovice (Budweis). His father was the choirmaster in the cathedral there, and Adalbert first studied with him. He then travelled to Prague, where he studied law but continued to learn music. At around this time Gyrowetz was in the employ of Count Franz von Fünfkirchen in Brno, whose employees were all musicians. Here he started composing (among other things) symphonies, of which he was eventually to write more than 60. In 1785 he moved to Vienna and met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who performed one of Gyrowetz's symphonies in the same year. From 1786 to around 1793, ...

Matyáš Žďárský
Mathias Zdarsky ( cs, Matyáš Žďárský; 25 February 1856 – 20 June 1940) was an early ski pioneer and is considered one of the founders of modern Alpine skiing technique: Arnold Lunn described him as the "father of alpine skiing". He was probably Austria's first ski instructor. He was also a teacher, painter and sculptor. Biography Zdarsky was born on 25 February 1856 in Kožichovice in Moravia, then Austria-Hungary, present Czech Republic. Inspired by Norway's Fridtjof Nansen's 1888 crossing of Greenland, he adapted skis for use on alpine terrain. In 1890, he developed a steel binding (the "Lilienfelder Stahlsohlenbindung"), which made steep mountain slopes and gate runs possible. Zdarsky felt the earlier bindings did not hold the foot firmly enough, and so he designed binding with a strong, sprung, steel sole, which is the basis of modern ski bindings. As in the earlier Norwegian skiing, he used only one ski pole. Unlike today, the skier steered by using their elbows. ...

Matthew (given Name)
Matthew is an English language male given name. It ultimately derives from the Hebrew name "" (''Matityahu'') which means "Gift of Yahweh". Etymology The Hebrew name "" (Matityahu) was transliterated into Greek to "Ματταθίας" (''Mattathias''). It was subsequently shortened to Greek "Ματθαῖος" (''Matthaios''); this was Latinised as ''Matthaeus'', which became ''Matthew'' in English. The popularity of the name is due to Matthew the Apostle who, in Christian tradition, is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the author of the Gospel of Matthew. Maiú and Maidiú were both a borrowing of the name Matthew among the Anglo-Normans settlers in Ireland. Maitiú is the most common Irish form of the name. Matthew is also used as an anglicisation of the Irish name '' Mathúin'' (meaning "bear"). Popularity The name Matthew became popular during the Middle Ages in Northwest Europe, and has been very common throughout the English-speaking world. In Ireland, Matthew wa ...
