Matilda (2017 Film)
''Matilda'' (russian: Матильда) is а 2017 Russian historical romantic drama film directed by Alexei Uchitel. It was released in cinemas on October 26, 2017. The picture tells the story about the relationship between ballerina Matilda Kshesinskaya and Nicholas II. Criticised by monarchist groups as a "distortion of historical events" and an "anti-Russian and anti-religious provocation", the film became the subject of fierce controversy, which included attempts to ban the film, threats to film distributors and arson. The premiere of the film took place on October 23, 2017 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Plot The film tells the story of the romantic relationship between the heir to the Russian throne, Nikolai Aleksandrovich Romanov, and the ballerina of the Imperial Theater, Matilda Kshesinskaya, from the time the 22-year-old tsesarevich and 17-year-old dancer met in 1890 to the coronation of Nikolai and his wife Aleksandra Feodorovna in 1896. Aleksei Yefimovich Uchitel (russian: Алексей Ефимович Учитель; born 31 August 1951) is a Russian film director. In 2002, he received the title People's Artist of Russia. Life and career Uchitel was born on 31 August 1951 in Leningrad to the family of documentary filmmaker Yefim Uchitel. In 1975, he graduated from VGIK, worked at the Leningrad studio of documentary films. In 1990, he founded his film studio "Rock". Uchitel's directorial debut was the film ''Gisele's Mania''. In 2000, he received the Nika Award, the Kinotavr Grand Prix and the Crystal Globe nomination for ''His Wife's Diary''. The film was about the last love affair of Ivan Bunin. His 2003 film '' The Stroll'' was entered into the 25th Moscow International Film Festival. His 2005 film ''Dreaming of Space'' won the Golden George at the 27th Moscow International Film Festival. Mathilde-Marie Feliksovna Kschessinska ( pl, Matylda Maria Krzesińska, russian: Матильда Феликсовна Кшесинская; 6 December 1971; also known as Princess Romanovskaya-Krasinskaya after her marriage) was a Polish ballerina from the noble family Krzesiński. Her father Feliks Krzesiński and her brother both danced in Saint Petersburg. She was a mistress of the future Tsar Nicholas II of Russia prior to his marriage, and later the wife of his cousin Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich of Russia. She was known in the West as ''Mathilde Kschessinska'' or ''Matilda Kshesinskaya''.
