Massa D'Albe
Massa d'Albe is a ''comune'' and town in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is part of the Marsica. The town was founded in the 14th century by the inhabitants of the ancient Alba Fucens, whose remains are in the area. The current ''comune'' was formed after 1915 by the union of two former ''comuni'', Massa and Corona, destroyed by an earthquake. Geography The central nucleus of the inhabited area lies on the south-western slopes of Mount Velino, one of the highest peaks of the central Apennines (2,487 m). Part of the territory is included in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park and in the Monte Velino Natural Reserve. In a gorge of the mountainous group of Velino opens the Bocca di Teve (987 m) situated at the beginning of the homonymous valley that marks the border of Abruzzo with Lazio and with the Montagne della Duchessa Regional Reserve. Castello Orsini
Castello Orsini (Italian for ''Orsini Castle'') is a Middle Ages castle in Massa d'Albe, Province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo). History The castle is located near the archaeological site marked by the remnants of the Equi settlement of Alba Fucens, a Roman colony built after the Second Samnite War in the 4th century BC, and the later medieval village of Albe, which was the capital of the Albense county and was almost completely destroyed by the 1915 Avezzano earthquake. Strategically positioned to control the original route of the via Tiburtina Valeria, the castle was rebuilt by the lords of Albe, only to be destroyed in 1268 by Charles I of Anjou as retribution after his victory in the Battle of Tagliacozzo. Alba Fucens
Alba Fucens was an ancient Italic people, Italic town located at elevation at the base of Monte Velino, approximately north of Avezzano, Abruzzo, central Italy. Its ruins can be found in the ''comune'' of Massa d'Albe. The city is largely visible after excavation and is probably the most important ancient site in Abruzzo. History It was originally a town of the Aequi, though on the frontier of the Marsi, but was occupied by a Latin colony (303-4 BC) owing to its strategic importance. Initially it was populated by 6,000 settlers who built a wall in the years immediately following their settlement.
