Maryland Million Lassie
Maryland Million Lassie is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in October since 1986 primarily at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland, Laurel, Maryland or at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, Baltimore. To be eligible for the Maryland Million Nursery, a horse must be sired by a stallion who stands in Maryland. Due to that restriction the race is classified as a non-graded or "listed" stakes race and is not eligible for grading by the American Graded Stakes Committee. The race is part of Maryland Million Day, a 12-race program held in mid October that was the creation of renowned television sports journalist Jim McKay. The "Maryland Million" is the first State-Bred showcase event ever created. Laurel Park Racecourse
Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. History Laurel Park Racecourse opened October 2, 1911 under the direction of the Laurel Four County Fair. In 1914, New York businessmen and prominent horsemen, Philip J. Dwyer and James Butler purchased the track and appointed Matt Winn as the general manager. In 1918 the field was used by Army Engineers as a training camp before deployment to France. In 1946, a stable fire broke out with 60 horses saved. In 1947, the Maryland Jockey Club, which owned Timonium and Pimlico, purchased Laurel Park from the Butler estate with the idea of shifting the Pimlico meeting to Laurel. Laurel, Maryland
Laurel is a city in Maryland, United States, located midway between Washington and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River. While the city limits are entirely in northern Prince George's County, outlying developments extend into Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Howard counties. Founded as a mill town in the early 19th century, Laurel expanded local industry and was later able to become an early commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers following the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835. Safely Kept
Safely Kept (April 7, 1986 – April 22, 2014) was a Maryland-bred Bay thoroughbred filly sired by Horatius. Safely Kept began her career in 1988 and won 24 of her 31 starts over the next three years. Most of her runs were against colts and geldings as at the time there were few sprint races restricted to females. She finished "in-the-money" in 30 of 31 starts. Safely Kept was euthanized the morning of April 22, 2014 for due to the infirmities of old age. She was 28 years old. Two and Three year-old seasons As a two-year-old, she won four of five races including two stakes races in the Playpen Stakes and the Smart Angle Stakes. At age three, she separated herself from every other sprinter in North America by recording eight wins in nine races. Open Mind (foaled 1986 – died 1998) was an American Thoroughbred racing filly. In 1988, she won the Eclipse Award for American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In 1989, she won the award as American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. In her third year, she also won the American Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing. Open Mind (chestnut filly, by Deputy Minister out of Stage Lucky, by Stage Door Johnny), was bred in New Jersey by Due Process Stables. She won 12 of her 19 career starts. Owned by Eugene V. Klein and trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Open Mind was named champion 2-year-old filly of 1988 when she won four of six starts, including the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with Ángel Cordero Jr. in the stirrups. Jim McKay Maryland Million Day is an annual day of stakes races thoroughbred horse races operated by Maryland Million Limited, a company formed in 1985. The Maryland Million is a one-day stakes program offering purses totaling $1 million, restricted to the nominated progeny of nominated stallions standing in the state. Jim McKay Maryland Million Day ranks as the highest single day in attendance, on-track wagering and simulcast handle for Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland annually. It ranks second in the state to only the Preakness Stakes Day card in all of those same categories and in purse money distributed.
