Mary Robinson
Mary Therese Winifred Robinson ( ga, Máire Mhic Róibín; ; born 21 May 1944) is an Irish politician who was the 7th president of Ireland, serving from December 1990 to September 1997, the first woman to hold this office. Prior to her election, Robinson was a senator in between 1969 and 1989, and a councilor on Dublin Corporation from 1979 to 1983. Though briefly affiliated with the Labour Party while a senator, she became the first independent candidate to win the presidency and the first not to have had the support of Fianna Fáil. Following her time as president, Robinson became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002. Robinson is widely regarded as having had a transformative effect on Ireland, having successfully campaigned on several liberalising issues as a senator and as a lawyer. Mary Robinson (née Darby; 27 November 1757 – 26 December 1800) was an English actress, poet, dramatist, novelist, and celebrity figure. She lived in England, in the cities of Bristol and London; she also lived in France and Germany for a time. She enjoyed poetry from the age of seven and started working, first as a teacher and then as actress, from the age of fourteen. She wrote many plays, poems and novels. She was a celebrity, gossiped about in newspapers, famous for her acting and writing. During her lifetime she was known as "the English Sappho". Mary Josephine Robinson (born 23 August 1955) is a British Conservative politician. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cheadle at the 2015 general election. Early life Robinson was born on 23 August 1955. She studied law and worked as a chartered accountant. She ran an accountancy practice in Preston called Robinson Rose Ltd with her husband, Stephen, but this went into administration and was acquired by the Champion Group in 2008. Mary Robinson (1778 – 7 February 1837, married name Mary Harrison), known as "The Maid of Buttermere", was an inn-keeper's daughter from Buttermere, Cumbria, England, who was deceived into a bigamous marriage. She is mentioned in William Wordsworth's "The Prelude". Life Robinson was a shepherdess and the daughter of the landlord of the Fish Inn in the village of Buttermere in England's Lake District. She was married bigamously in 1802 to John Hatfield (c.1758–1803), who presented himself as "Colonel Hope". The marriage of the celebrated local beauty to the brother of an earl (as he claimed) was widely reported, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote in the London ''Morning Post'' of "The romantic marriage". ''Mary Robinson'' was an 1854 medium clipper in the San Francisco, India, and the guano trades. She was known for having spent an entire month attempting to round Cape Horn in bad weather. Voyages ''Mary Robinson'' made six voyages, from Boston to New York and then to San Francisco. In 1864, ''Mary'' ran her fastest run in 115 days. She was accompanied by '' Carrier Dove'' off Cape Horn on this trip, and beat ''Carrier Dove'' to San Francisco by 18 days. On her maiden run, ''Mary Robinson'' was not as fortunate.
