Mary Anne De Boisblanc
Mary Anne Pecot de Boisblanc (1925-2015) was a self-taught American artist from Louisiana. She was best known for her paintings which depicted Cajun life and culture. Biography Born in 1925, Mary Anne de Boisblanc grew up in Labadieville, Louisiana. She first began painting her colorful pieces in the late 1960s, drawing on her memories of growing up in rural Louisiana and her own Cajun heritage. The artist described herself as a "Primitive Naive Acadian Artist." Her work is included in the collections of the West Baton Rouge Museum. Her archives are held in the collection of the Newcomb Center for Research on Women. Mary Anne de Boisblanc died on December 17, 2015, at the age of 90. Naïve Art
Naïve art is usually defined as visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). When this aesthetic is emulated by a trained artist, the result is sometimes called '' primitivism'', ''pseudo-naïve art'', or ''faux naïve art''. Unlike folk art, naïve art does not necessarily derive from a distinct popular cultural context or tradition; indeed, at least in the advanced economies and since the Printing Revolution, awareness of the local fine art tradition has been inescapable, as it diffused through popular prints and other media. The Cajuns (; French: ''les Cadjins'' or ''les Cadiens'' ), also known as Louisiana ''Acadians'' (French: ''les Acadiens''), are a Louisiana French ethnicity mainly found in the U.S. state of Louisiana. While Cajuns are usually described as the descendants of the Acadian exiles who went to Louisiana over the course of ''Le Grand Dérangement'', Louisianians frequently use ''Cajun'' as a broad cultural term (particularly when referencing Acadiana) without necessitating descent from the deported Acadians. Outsider Art
Outsider art is art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art worlds. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. The term ''outsider art'' was coined in 1972 as the title of a book by art critic Roger Cardinal. It is an English equivalent for ''art brut'' (, "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created in the 1940s by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Labadieville, Louisiana
Labadieville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Assumption Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pierre Part Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Labadieville, originally called "Brûlée Labadie", takes its name from a French pioneer and resident, Jean Louis L'Abadie. In 1721, there were some fifty warriors of the Chitimacha tribe. During the two decades after 1750, the area around Labadieville was taken up by French and Spanish, joined by Acadians, Isleños and a sprinkling of Germans from the Cote des Allemands or German Coast to the east on the Mississippi River. In 1843, a mission was established. St. Philomena Catholic Church dates from 1848 as an organized parish, and the first mass was said in the home of Widow Zacharie Boudreaux.
