Martin Stephens (judge)
Stephen Martin Stephens (26 June 1939 – 15 April 2024) was a British judge. He was called to Bar in 1963 and took Silk in 1982. He was appointed a Recorder in 1979, as a Circuit Judge in 1986 and then appointed a Judge of the Central Criminal Court (England and Wales), Central Criminal Court in 1999. He was a former member of the Parole Board of England and Wales. Stephens died on 15 April 2024, at the age of 84. Cases In January 2009 Stephens presided over the trial of James Hopkins accused of murdering Ms Browne, a transsexual prostitute based in Marylebone. Hopkins was found guilty of the murder of Browne who had a number of celebrities among her clients. Prosecuting Hopkins, barrister for the prosecution commented: "There is some evidence that Ms Browne did have some clients who were in the public eye." Martin Stephens (politician)
Martin Stephens (born 23 September 1945) is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009. He was the finance spokesperson for the United Democratic Movement (UDM) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the Democratic Alliance (DA). He formerly represented the United Party in the apartheid-era House of Assembly. Early life and career Stephens was born on 23 September 1945. He joined the House of Assembly in 1970 when he was elected to represent the constituency of Florida outside Johannesburg. He was the youngest MP in the house at the time and held his seat until 1974. Post-apartheid career In the 2004 general election, Stephens was elected to a seat in the National Assembly, ranked fourth on the UDM's national party list. Martin Eric Stephens (born 1976) is an Australian former bartender who was convicted in Indonesia for drug trafficking as a member of the Bali Nine. In 2005, on his first trip to Bali, Stephens was arrested at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar with of heroin taped to his chest and concealed under his clothing. After a criminal trial, on 14 February 2006 Stephens was sentenced to life imprisonment. His appeal to the Indonesian Supreme Court to have the sentence reduced to 10 years was rejected in January 2011. Martin Stephan (1777–1846) was pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Dresden, Germany during the early 19th century. He organized the Saxon emigration to the United States in the early 19th century.
