Marquette Golden Eagles Men's Ice Hockey
The Marquette Golden Eagles men's ice hockey team is a college ice hockey program that represents Marquette University. They are a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association at the Division II level. The university sponsored varsity ice hockey from 1922 to 1933. History Marquette was one of several midwestern colleges to found a varsity hockey program in the early 1920s. The Blue and Gold began playing in 1922 and rose to the top of their field, twice winning the Western Intercollegiate Championship. As was common with many schools of the era, Marquette's team suffered with the vagaries of weather and a series of warm winters in the early 30s put the program in jeopardy. 1922–23 Marquette Blue And Gold Men's Ice Hockey Season
The 1922–23 Marquette Blue and Gold men's ice hockey season was the inaugural season of play for the program. Season Joining in with other Midwestern United States, midwestern schools, Marquette founded their program in 1922. The first order of business was hiring a coach and the administration was advised to hire George Grady. "Buck" was a Canadian who had played collegiately at the University of Saskatchewan before serving in the military during World War I. After the war he began coaching hockey and was player/coach of a team in Chicago when he accepted the position. A team was quickly assembled with most players coming from the college of dental surgery. The first game was played against nearby Wisconsin Badgers men's ice hockey, Wisconsin and, though a loss, the team acquitted themselves well.
