Marquard
Marquard is a small farming town in the Free State province of South Africa that serves Winburg in the northwest. The town was set up in 1905 by an influential Dutch Reform minister, JJ Marquard, with the help of Christoffel Cornelis Froneman, the commandant of the Orange Free State. It was established on the farm Varschfontein and attained municipal status in the same year. Marquard is 169 kilometers east north-east of Bloemfontein and 45 kilometers south-west of Senekal. Jürg Marquard (born 13 July 1945) is a Swiss businessman and publisher. He belongs to the 300 wealthiest Swiss with a net worth of 500 million Swiss Francs (according to Bilanz). Early life and education Marquard was born in Zürich and raised in Urdorf, the son of a dentist of German ancestry. He was still in school, when he engaged in journalism at a very young age. After he completed his Matura at the ''Wirtschaftsgymnasium der Kantonsschule Zürich'' (today a part of ''Kantonsschule Enge'') he told his father not to pursue a college degree and instead become a full-time publisher of magazines. Odo Marquard
Odo Marquard (26 February 1928 – 9 May 2015) was a German philosopher. He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Giessen from 1965 to 1993. In 1984 he received the Sigmund Freud Prize for Scientific Prose. Early life and education Odo Marquard was born in Stolp, Farther Pomerania. He studied philosophy, German literature and theology, obtaining his doctorate at the University of Münster and his habilitation at the University of Freiburg. In Münster he studied under Joachim Ritter, whose Ritter School he sometimes is considered a member of. An even greater influence was Max Müller, whom Marquard studied under in Freiburg, and his use of the philosophy of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger to create a phenomenological update of neo-scholasticism. Rube Marquard
Richard William "Rube" Marquard (October 9, 1886 – June 1, 1980) was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball in the 1910s and early 1920s. He achieved his greatest success with the New York Giants. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. Early life Rube Marquard was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to German immigrant Fred Marquard and Lena Heiser Marquard. Marquard claimed an 1889 year of birth, but 1900 census data and a birth certificate show an 1886 year of birth. Lena Marquard died of an abdominal infection in 1899, and Rube's grandmother took responsibility for raising him. Marquard Gude
Marquard Gude (Gudius) (1 February 1635 – 26 November 1689) was a German archaeologist and classical scholar, most famous for his collection of Greek and Latin inscriptions. He was born at Rendsburg in Holstein, Germany. He was originally intended for the law, but from an early age showed a decided preference for classical studies. In 1658 he went to the Netherlands in the hope of finding work as a teacher of classics, and in the following year, through the influence of JF Gronovius, he obtained the post of tutor and travelling companion to a wealthy young Dutchman, Samuel Schars. During his travels Gude seized the opportunity of copying inscriptions and manuscripts. Marquard Herrgott
Marquard Herrgott (9 October 1694 – 9 October 1762) was a German Benedictine historian and diplomat. Hergott was born at Freiburg in the Breisgau. After studying humanities at Freiburg and Strasburg, he became tutor in a private family at the latter place and accompanied his two pupils to Paris, where he remained two years. Upon his return to Germany he entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Blasien in the Black Forest, made his vows on 17 November 1715, and was sent to Rome to study theology. After being ordained priest on 17 Dec., 1718, he returned to St. Blasien. In 1721 he went to the Abbey of St. Gall to study Oriental languages, but was soon recalled in order to accompany his abbot to Vienna, where he devoted himself for a few months to the study of history. Marquard J. Schwarz (July 30, 1887 – February 17, 1968) was an American freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 1906 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg (14 May 1644–9 Oct 1693, aged 49) was the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg from 1683 to 1693. Biography Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg was born in Eichstätt on 14 May 1644. He became a canon of Bamberg Cathedral, Würzburg Cathedral, and Augsburg Cathedral. Marquard of Randeck (or of Randelle; Italian: ''Marquardo di Randeck''; 1296 - 3 January 1381) was Patriarch of Aquileia from 1365 until his death. Biography He was born at Augsburg, the son of a knight, but was educated by his uncle, the canon of the city. He was later a chancellor of emperor Charles IV at Avignon. Marquard Von Salzbach
Marquard (or Markward) von Salzbach was a Teutonic Knight, who played a prominent role in shaping the relationship between the Knights and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania between 1389 and 1410. He was taken captive in July 1384 by Vytautas, Grand Duke of Lithuania, after Vytautas reconciled with his cousin Jogaila during the Lithuanian Civil War (1381–1384). At the time Marquard was a castellan of New Marienburg, a Teutonic Castle on the Neman River.
