Marmaton is an unincorporated community in Bourbon County, Kansas, United States. The community is located three miles east of Redfield, and two miles south of U.S. Route 54, at the intersection of 155th Street and Limestone Road. History Marmaton was incorporated in 1858. It was named for the Marmaton River, which crosses the township. Marmaton is a corruption of ''Marmiton'', a French name given by fur traders meaning "scullion". Fort Scott, Kansas
Fort Scott is a city in and the county seat of Bourbon County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 7,552. It is named for Gen. Winfield Scott. The city is located south of Kansas City on the Marmaton River. It is the home of the Fort Scott National Historic Site and the Fort Scott National Cemetery. History Established and garrisoned by the U.S. Army from 1842–1853, soldiers at military Fort Scott assisted with the protection of the Permanent Indian Frontier. After the army abandoned the fort in 1853, the buildings were purchased by local settlers at a government auction in 1855. The community of Fort Scott was laid out in 1857, and was chartered as a city in 1860. Redfield is a city in Bourbon County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 90. History Redfield was founded in 1866. The city was named for Dr. Redfield, an early settler. The first post office in Redfield was established in 1872. Area code 620 covers telephone exchanges in most of southern Kansas. It was created as the result of a split from 316 on February 3, 2001. The area code stretches across the southern half of the state, from the Colorado border in the west to the Missouri border in the east. It completely surrounds 316, which now only serves Wichita and its inner suburbs, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan.
