Mark R. Isfeld Senior Secondary is a public high school in Courtenay, British Columbia, part of School District 71 Comox Valley. History The school opened as Courtenay Junior Middle School in 1995, but was renamed in October 2001 in honor of Master Corporal Mark Robert Isfeld, a Canadian soldier killed in Croatia in 1994 while serving as peacekeeper. Isfeld was known for distributing small knitted dolls made by his mother to children he met during his tours of duty. It also became a high school, serving years 9 to 12. In the late 2000s this changed to 8–12 and an existing French immersion program moved to the school. Athletics Mark R. Courtenay ( ) is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It was originally organized in 1965 as the British Columbia Federation of School Athletic Associations (BCFSAA) by a group of interested teachers and administrators. A Constitution was adopted in 1966. Jim Stewart of Coquitlam was the first President. Stewart was elected to the BC School Sports Honour Roll in 1993. Operational support was received from the provincial government (but Provincial support was withdrawn in 2009). Taylor William Andrew Green (born November 2, 1986) is a Canadian former professional baseball infielder who played for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB). After retiring, Green became a scout for the Brewers. Amateur career Green attended Mark R. Spencer O'Brien
Spencer O’Brien (born February 2, 1988) is a Canadian snowboarder. She was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia, and is of Indigenous descent. She won the gold medal in slopestyle at the 2013 FIS Snowboarding World Championships. O’Brien has also won five medals (one gold, one silver, three bronze) at the Winter X Games. Language immersion, or simply immersion, is a technique used in bilingual language education in which two languages are used for instruction in a variety of topics, including math, science, or social studies.
