Mark O'Brien (born May 7, 1984) is a Canadian actor and director best known for his roles as Des Courtney in ''Republic of Doyle'' and Tom Rendon in '' Halt and Catch Fire''. He won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards for his performance as Terry Sawchuk in the biographical drama film '' Goalie''. He is an English major with a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland. His mother was a nurse and his father a truck driver. Mark also has three older sisters. Mark O'Brien (born 13 May 1984 in Dublin, Ireland), is an Irish footballer who plays for Dundalk in the League of Ireland Premier Division. O'Brien is a central midfielder and comes from a footballing background as his father Derek played for Shamrock Rovers from 1981 to 1983 and his uncles Fran and Ray both played for Ireland. His younger brother Colin played alongside him at Shelbourne. Career Early years O'Brien played for Belvedere at youth level and made several appearances at under-age level for Ireland. He began his senior career at Shamrock Rovers making his debut on 7 May 2003 in a League of Ireland Cup tie against Bray Wanderers. He impressed enough to win the Young Player of the Year at the club in 2004. Bohemians O'Brien then signed for bitter rivals Bohemians for the 2005 season and he made his debut for Bohs against his former club Shamrock Rovers on 18 March 2005 at Dalymount Park. Mark Leo O'Brien (born 20 November 1992) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a defender. He played in the English Football League for Derby County, Luton Town and Newport County and in the Scottish Premiership for Motherwell. Club career Derby County O'Brien started his career at Cherry Orchard, before he was spotted by Derby County scouts in the Dublin & District Schoolboy League. After signing for Derby, O'Brien became a regular in the club's under-18 team in 2008–09, before making his professional debut as a 64th-minute substitute for Lewin Nyatanga in a 3–1 defeat away to Watford on 3 May 2009. He was earlier named Derby County Academy Player of the Year at a club awards ceremony. He also won the 2009 Republic of Ireland Under-16 Player of the Year award. Mark O'Brien (July 31, 1949 – July 4, 1999) was an American journalist, poet, and advocate for the disabled. He has been the subject of two films: '' Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien'', which won an Academy Award in 1997, and '' The Sessions'' in which he was portrayed by John Hawkes, a film that won the audience award in the U.S. Dramatic category at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. ''The Sessions'' was based on his essay, "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate", which appeared in the ''Sun'' magazine in 1990. The sex surrogate was Cheryl Cohen-Greene. They remained friends until his death. Personal life O'Brien contracted polio in 1955 and spent the rest of his life paralyzed and requiring an iron lung. In the iron lung he attended UC Berkeley, produced his poetry and articles, and became an advocate for disabled people.
