Mark Miller (American Football)
Mark George Miller (born August 13, 1956) is a former American football quarterback. He played with the Cleveland Browns (1978–1979) before being traded in August 1980 to the Green Bay Packers, where he saw no action. He was released by the Packers before the 1981 season. Miller then briefly resurfaced with the Michigan Panthers of the United States Football League in 1983. Miller had put together a solid college career with Bowling Green State University (1974–1977), resulting in the Browns making him a third round selection in the 1978 NFL Draft. During his brief career his role was that of a backup quarterback, consequently making his playing time limited. United States Football League
The United States Football League (USFL) was a professional American football league that played for three seasons, 1983 through 1985. The league played a spring/summer schedule in each of its active seasons. The 1986 season was scheduled to be played in the autumn/winter, directly competing against the long-established National Football League (NFL). However, the USFL ceased operations before that season was scheduled to begin. The ideas behind the USFL were conceived in 1965 by New Orleans businessman David Dixon, who saw a market for a professional football league that would play in the summer, when the National Football League and college football were in their off-season. Dixon had been a key player in the construction of the Louisiana Superdome and the expansion of the NFL into New Orleans in 1967. The 1978 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held May 2–3, 1978, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the first overall pick in the 1978 draft, by virtue of their 2–12 record in 1977.
