Mark Deering
Mark Deering (6 March 1900 – 26 April 1973) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. A farmer, he first stood for election at the 1951 general election but was not successful. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". 1954 Irish General Election
The 1954 Irish general election was held on Tuesday, 18 May to elect the 15th Dáil. The newly-elected members assembled at Leinster House on 2 June when the new Taoiseach and government were appointed. The general election took place in 40 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 147 seats in the lower house of parliament, Dáil Éireann. Campaign The general election of 1954 was caused by the loss of an overall majority for the ruling Fianna Fáil party in the Dáil. Rather than be voted down on a vote in the Dáil, Éamon de Valera decided to call a general election and let the people decide. Fianna Fáil had the most to lose, their campaign concentrated on providing political stability for the next five years. They also put forward strong arguments against coalition governments. The 1965 Irish general election to the 18th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 7 April, following the dissolution of the 17th Dáil on 18 March by President Éamon de Valera on the request of Taoiseach Seán Lemass. The general election took place in 38 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 144 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas. Thomas Brennan (Fianna Fáil Politician)
Thomas Brennan (1886 – 22 January 1953) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who sat for 9 years as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Wicklow. Early life and revolutionary period Brennan joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917, was appointed Battalion Commandant of 4 Battalion, North Wexford Brigade and was involved in raids and other armed operations during Irish War of Independence. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Irish Civil War (1922-1923), Brennan took part in fighting against National forces in County Wexford and County Wicklow. He was captured on 28 July 1922, took part in the burning of Portlaoghise Jail, underwent 23 days hunger strike and was released on 11 May 1924. Brennan later applied to the Irish government for a service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 and was awarded 5 and 2/3 years years service at Grade C for his service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923.
