Mariáš (card Game)
Mariáš or Mariasch a three-player, solo trick-taking game of the King–Queen family of Ace-Ten games, but with a simplified scoring system. It is one of the most popular card games in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but is also played in Bavaria in Germany as well as in Austria. The Hungarian national card game Ulti is an elaboration of Mariáš. Point-trick
A trick-taking game is a card or tile-based game in which play of a ''hand'' centers on a series of finite rounds or units of play, called ''tricks'', which are each evaluated to determine a winner or ''taker'' of that trick. The object of such games then may be closely tied to the number of tricks taken, as in plain-trick games such as contract bridge, whist, and spades, or to the value of the cards contained in taken tricks, as in point-trick games such as pinochle, the tarot family, briscola, and most evasion games like hearts. Trick-and-draw games are trick-taking games in which the players can fill up their hands after each trick. Kontra (cards)
Kontra or Contra is a term used in certain card games of Central European origin that is called by players to raise the stakes. It is the equivalent of "double" in other games. The term comes from the Latin word, ''contra'', which means "against". In German there is also a verb, ''kontrieren'', which means "to double" or "to announce 'Kontra'". Use in card games Tarock If a player is given the right to bid in Tarock games, an opponent may announce ''Kontra'' if he thinks the soloist is unlikely to win. This doubles the value of the game. If the soloist believes that he can still win the game, he may reply with ''Rekontra'' (or ''Re'' for short), which doubles the game value again. Ober (playing Card)
The Ober, formerly Obermann, in Austrian also called the Manderl, is the court card in the German and Swiss styles of playing cards that corresponds in rank to the Queen in French packs. The name ''Ober'' (lit.: "over") is an abbreviation of the former name for these cards, ''Obermann'', which meant something like 'superior' or 'lord'. Van der Linde argues that the King, Ober and Unter in a pack of German cards represented the military ranks of general, officer (''Oberofficier'') and sergeant (''Unterofficier''), while the pip cards represented the common soldier. The king is a playing card with a picture of a king displayed on it. The king is usually the highest-ranking face card. In the French version of playing cards and tarot decks, the king immediately outranks the queen. In Italian and Spanish playing cards, the king immediately outranks the knight. In German and Swiss playing cards, the king immediately outranks the '' Ober''. In some games, the king is the highest-ranked card; in others, the ace is higher. Meld (cards)
In card games, a meld is a set of matching cards, typically three or more, that earn a player points and/or allow them to deplete their hand. Melds typically come in sequences of ascending cards belonging to the same suit known as '' runs'' () or ''sets/groups'' of cards of identical rank (). Hearts (suit)
Hearts (french: Cœur, german: Herz) is one of the four suits in playing cards of both the French deck and the German deck. However, the symbol is slightly different: in a French deck and in a German-suited deck. In Bridge, for which in Germany the French deck is common, it is called by its French name, ''Cœur''. Acorns (suit)
Acorns (German: ''Eichel'', or more unusually ''Hackl'' or ''Ecker'') is a suit in a deck of German playing cards or Swiss playing cards. This suit was invented in 15th-century German-speaking lands and is a survivor from a large pool of experimental suit signs created to replace the Latin suits. Around 1480, French card makers adapted this sign into clubs in a French deck (known as clovers in France). Bells (suit)
Bells are a suit in playing cards of the Swiss-suited and German-suited cards. Unlike the other German suits, this suit was not adapted by French card makers. In its place, there was initially a suit of red crescents until the suit of Diamonds was added to the French pack (known as tiles in France). The suit is usually known in German as ''Schellen'', but is sometimes abbreviated to ''Schell''.
