Marius Schoonmaker
Marius Schoonmaker (April 24, 1811 – January 5, 1894) was a United States representative from New York. Biography Schoonmaker was born to Cornelia (nee Groen) (1784–1874) and Zachariah Schoonmaker (1785–1818) in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. His father died when he was young, but he attended public schools and graduated from Yale College in 1830. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced practice in Kingston. Schoonmaker was a member of the New York State Senate (10th D.) in 1850 and 1851, and was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress, holding office from March 4, 1851, to March 3, 1853. Afterwards he resumed the practice of law in Kingston. Schoonmaker was Auditor of the New York State Canal Department from 1854 to 1855, and Superintendent of Banks from 1855 to 1856. 1889 Apia Cyclone
The 1889 Apia cyclone was a tropical cyclone in the South Pacific Ocean, which swept across Apia, Samoa on March 15, 1889, during the Samoan crisis. The effect on shipping in the harbour was devastating, largely because of what has been described as "an error of judgement that will forever remain a paradox in human psychology". The growing storm Events ashore had led to upheaval in the Pacific nations and colonies. Both the United States and Imperial Germany saw this as a potential opportunity to expand their holdings in the Pacific through gunboat diplomacy. In order to be ready should such an opportunity arise, both nations had dispatched squadrons to the town to investigate the situation and act accordingly. William Murray (New York Politician)
William Murray (October 1, 1803 – August 25, 1875) was an American banker and politician who served two terms as a United States representative from New York from 1851 to 1855. Biography Murray was born near Middletown, New York on October 1, 1803, a son of William Murray Sr. and Mary Ann (Beakes) Murray. His siblings included Ambrose S. Murray. Early career William Murray attended the common schools, and was employed as a clerk in mercantile establishments, first in Middletown, and later in New York City. He subsequently engaged in a successful mercantile career in Goshen. In 1844, he was chosen as one of New York's presidential electors, and cast his ballot for the Democratic ticket of James K. Polk and George M. Dallas. Platt Adams (politician)
Platt Adams (December 20, 1792 – May 12, 1887 in New York City) was an American merchant and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joseph Adams (d. 1832), and was born on the family farm about six miles below Catskill, then in Albany County, now in Greene County. He married Clarissa Dudley (1791–1857), and they had four children. He was at times Postmaster of Durham; Supervisor of the Town of Durham, a Justice of the Peace, and a colonel of the State Militia. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Greene Co.) in 1820–21, Sheriff of Greene County from 1829 to 1831, and again a member of the State Assembly in 1839. He was a member of the New York State Senate (10th D.) in 1848 and 1849. On May 16, 1859, he married Jennie Eliza Montgomery (d. 1899). Congressman John Adams (1778–1854) was his brother.
