Marist College, Athlone
Marist College is a secondary school for boys in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. History and development The school was founded in 1884 by the Marist Brothers, a French Order, and the first principal was Brother Mungo. The original school was based in Glesson Street/Saint Mary's Square. The college had a seminary for Juniorate training between 1915 and 1936 located at Bailieborough Castle, County Cavan. In 1973, the school moved to its current location on Retreat Road. In January 2022, the Department of Education gave the go-ahead for a new school building to be developed at the college. Speaking to the ''Westmeath Independent'', principal Michael Dermody said this was an important milestone in the history of the school. Athlone
Athlone (; ) is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree. It is the second most populous town in the Midlands Region with a population of 21,349 in the 2016 census. Most of the town lies on the east bank of the river, within the townland of the same name; however, by the terms of the Local Government Act of 1898, six townlands on the west bank of the Shannon, formerly in County Roscommon, were incorporated into the town, and consequently, into the county of Westmeath. John McCormack (tenor)
Papal Count John Francis McCormack, KSG, KSS, KHS (14 June 1884 – 16 September 1945), was an Irish tenor celebrated for his performances of the operatic and popular song repertoires, and renowned for his diction and breath control. He was also a Papal Count. He became a naturalised American citizen before returning to live in Ireland. Professor Ralph Kenna (born 27 August 1964 – died 26 October 2023) was an Irish mathematician and theoretical physicist who was head of the statistical physics research group at Coventry University. He was a specialist in statistical physics, complex systems and Irish mythology. Early life and education Kenna was born in Athlone, on the border between counties Roscommon and Westmeath, Ireland, on 27 August 1964. Robbie Henshaw
Robbie Henshaw (born 12 June 1993) is an Irish rugby union player. He plays primarily as a centre, although he can also play fullback. Henshaw currently plays for Irish provincial team Leinster in the United Rugby Championship, and internationally for Ireland. Early life Born in Athlone, Henshaw grew up in the suburb Coosan and was a student at Marist College in the town. In 2011 he was part of the Buccaneers Under 19 team that won Connacht League and Cup and the All Ireland League. He was captain of the school's rugby team in 2012 when they won their first Connacht Senior Schools Cup in 35 years. In addition to rugby Henshaw also played Gaelic football in his youth. Jack Carty (born 31 August 1992) is a rugby union player from Ireland. His primary position is at fly-half. Having started out with his hometown club, Buccaneers, Carty currently plays for the team of his native province of Connacht in the United Rugby Championship, having come through the team's academy. He is Connacht's record points scorer in the Pro14, having overtaken Ian Keatley in March 2019. Carty is an international, having made his debut for the side against in 2019.
