Marianela (1940 Film)
''Marianela'' is a 1940 Spanish drama film directed by Benito Perojo. It is based on the 1878 novel by Benito Pérez Galdós. Plot The tragic story of Marianela, a poor and ugly girl, and Pablo, a man born blind who is in love with her. The action takes place between Socartes, mining town, and Aldeacorba, agricultural area, where Don Francisco Penáguila lives with her son Pablo. Life has been generous with mister Penáguila, but his whole well-being has been overshadowed by the blindness of his son. Pablo is happy beside his guide, a girl who everyone calls "Nela"; with her Pablo walks, talks and delights. Nela, meanwhile, a poor orphan who lives with the family of the mine foreman, mister Centeno, despised by all, incapable of anything useful, just feel joy accompanying Pablo. Benito Perojo
Benito Perojo González (Madrid, 14 June 1894 – Madrid, 11 November 1974) was a successful Spanish film director and film producer. Biography Son of José Perojo Figueras (1850–1908), a journalist and politician of Cuban origin, by his wife, Ana Cortina Fuentes (1871–1954). On 18 July 1966 he was honoured by the Caballero Gran Cruz de la Orden del Mérito Civil. He died in Madrid on 11 November 1974 aged 80 and he was survived by his daughter Carmen Perojo Carreras. María de la Asunción Mercader Forcada (; 6 March 1918 – 26 January 2011) was a Spanish film actress who appeared in some forty films between 1923 and 1992. Benito Pérez Galdós (May 10, 1843 – January 4, 1920) was a Spanish Spanish Realist literature, realist novelist. He was the leading literary figure in 19th-century Spain, and some scholars consider him second only to Miguel de Cervantes in stature as a Spanish novelist. Pérez Galdós was a prolific writer, publishing 31 novels, 46 ''Episodios Nacionales'' (''National Episodes''), 23 plays, and the equivalent of 20 volumes of shorter fiction, journalism and other writings.
