Marian College is an Independent school, independent Roman Catholicism in Australia, Roman Catholic Mixed-sex education, co-educational Secondary school, secondary day school located in Ararat, Victoria, Ararat, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. Established in 1955, Marian College works under the governance of the Brigidine Sisters. History Marian College was founded in 1888 by the Brigidine Sisters from Ireland. The foundress being Mother Gertrude Kelly. It follows the five Brigidine Core Values and is under the motto "Fortiter et Suaviter" - Strength and Gentleness. The first teachers of the school were five Brigidine nuns from Ireland sent by Bishop Daniel Delany to Australia. The sisters came on the boat "The Ormuz" and moved into the new brick convent. The original convent is still in use in the school today housing the chapel, parlour, hall, offices, library and staff area. Marian College is a Marist Catholic secondary school in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland that was established in 1954. History In the early 1950s, the then Archbishop of Dublin, Dr John Charles McQuaid, had invited the Marist Brothers to open a school in the Sandymount-Ballsbridge area. This was in response to the opening of a co-educational school, Sandymount High School. Co-education was anathema to Archbishop McQuaid, so he wanted to provide a Catholic option beside it. The Marists found a site at Riverside House on the banks of the River Dodder and on 8 September 1954 the first pupils entered the Brothers’ house to begin their secondary schooling. Until 1999, Sandymount High School was next door to Marian College. For the first 34 years, the College was run by a succession of Marist Brothers. Marian College, Christchurch was founded in 1982 with the merging of two Catholic secondary schools for girls, St Mary's College (Sisters of Mercy, established in Colombo Street in 1893) and McKillop College (named for Mary MacKillop (St Mary of the Cross)) located in Shirley (founded in 1949 by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart). Marian University is a private Roman Catholic university in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1851 by the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Indiana, the college moved to Indianapolis in 1937. Marian was referred to as Marian College from 1936 until 2009, when it was renamed Marian University. Marian University is a Roman Catholic university in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of Saint Agnes, which continues to sponsor the university today. Marian University has an enrollment of approximately 2000 undergraduate and graduate students. Seventy-one percent of students are women. Ninety-four percent of students receive financial aid.
