The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. Víctor Pecci Sr. (born October 15, 1955) is a former professional tennis player from Paraguay. He was ranked as high as world No. 9 in singles in 1980 and world No. 31 in doubles in 1984. Pecci is famous for reaching the 1979 French Open final. He beat Guillermo Vilas 6–0, 6–2, 7–5 in the quarterfinals and Jimmy Connors 7–5, 6–4, 5–7, 6–3 in the semifinals, but lost to three-time champion Björn Borg in the final. Ángel Giménez (born 10 October 1955) is a former professional tennis player from Spain. Career Giménez twice made the second round in the singles draw of a Grand Slam draw, both times in 1981. At the French Open he defeated Bolivian Mario Martinez, before losing to Paul Torre. Then at Wimbledon that year he had a win over Jörgen Windahl and was then beaten by Andrew Pattison in five sets. His best doubles performance came in the 1981 French Open, when he and Ricardo Cano reached the third round. He never competed in the Australian Open or US Open. He won two titles on the Grand Prix tennis circuit, at Vienna in 1980 and then the British Hard Court Championships later that year. As a doubles player he reached three finals, but lost them all. Vilas was the No. 1 of the Grand Prix seasons in 1974, 1975 and 1977, and won four Grand Slam tournaments, one year-end Masters, nine Grand Prix Super Series titles and a total of 62 ATP titles. A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. John Edward Barrett, (born 17 April 1931) is a former tennis player, television commentator and author. He was born in Mill Hill, North West London, the son of Alfred Edward Barrett, a leaf tobacco merchant, and Margaret Helen Barrett (née Walker). He had one sister, Irene Margaret Leppington (1925–2009), a research chemist. His father had the rare distinction of having played both for Leicester Tigers RFC as a wing three-quarter and for Leicester Fosse FC (the former Leicester City) as a wing half.
