Mar Assia Al-Hakim Church
Mar Assia al-Hakim Church ( ar, كنيسة مار آسيا الحكيم) is a Syriac Catholic Church in Al-Jdayde quarter of Aleppo, Syria. The church belongs to the Archeparchy of Aleppo of the Syrian Catholic Church. It was completed in 1500 and is active up to now. History After Tamerlane invaded Aleppo in 1400 and destroyed it, the Christians migrated out of the city walls and established their own neighbourhood in 1420, at the northwestern suburbs of the city, thus founding the quarters of al-Jdayde. The vast majority of the Christian population returned to Aleppo by the end of the 15th century. The Syrian Catholic population of the city had re-established its presence in Aleppo and re-built the church in 1500 and called it the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Syrians. The Cathedral became the seat of the Syriac Catholic Patriarchate between the 17th and the 19th centuries. Al-Jdayde
Al-Jdayde ( ar, جديدة, also transliterated as ''al-Jdeideh'', ''al-Judayda'', ''al-Jdeïdé'' or ''al-Jadida'') is a historic predominantly Christian neighbourhood of Aleppo. It is noted for its winding narrow alleys, richly decorated mansions and churches. It was an area of significant cultural and historical interest. Much of Al-Jdayde suffered catastrophic damage during the Syrian Civil War. History At the end of the Mamluk period, al-Jdayde was a small suburb benefiting from a few shops located outside of city's northern walls and near the cemeteries and storage areas. Aleppo Massacre Of 1850
The Massacre of Aleppo ( ar, قومة حلب, '), often referred to simply as The Events ('), was a riot perpetrated by Muslim residents of Aleppo, largely from the eastern quarters of the city, against Christian residents, largely located in the northern suburbs of Judayde (Jdeideh) and Salibeh. The riot began on the evening of October 17, 1850, and ended two days later on October 19, 1850. The riot resulted in numerous deaths, including that of Peter VII Jarweh, the Syriac Catholic Patriarch. The riot is generally characterized as the culmination of tensions between the diverse groups that had historically populated Aleppo, including tensions between Muslims and Christians and between janissaries and the ashraf. Syrian Archaeological Heritage Under Threat, also known as Syrian Archaeological Heritage in Danger, Patrimoine Syrien or Le patrimoine archéologique syrien en danger ( ar, الآثار السورية في خطر) is a cultural heritage activist group that runs a Facebook page documenting the damage to Syrian and World Heritage during the Syrian Civil War. The group was founded by Ali Othman and is led by several Syrian and European archaeologists including Ghayad Daoud, Shaker al Shbib and Taysir al Halebi. The spokesman for the group is Spanish archaeologist Rodrigo Martin, who remarked about the damage being done during the conflict ''"If this continues, the situation will be like in Iraq, it could mean that a heritage that is of great importance for the whole world destroyed."'' The Free Syrian Army (FSA) ( ar, الجيش السوري الحر, al-jaysh as-Sūrī al-ḥur) is a loose faction in the Syrian Civil War founded on 29 July 2011 by officers of the Syrian Armed Forces with the goal of bringing down the government of Bashar al-Assad. Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption ( ar, كاتدرائية سيدة الانتقال), is an Eastern Catholic (Syriac) church in Aleppo, Syria, located in the Christian quarter of al-Jdayde. The current church was built in 1970, replacing the old cathedral. Due to the Syrian civil war it was closed from 2012 to 2018. History The original Syriac cathedral in Aleppo was constructed in 1500s, and was one of the earliest churches built in the historic neighborhood of al-Jdayde. The church was originally called the Cathedral of Our Lady of Syrians and was the seat of the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate between the 17th and 19th centuries. Pietro Della Valle ( la, Petrus a Valle; 2 April 1586 – 21 April 1652), also written Pietro della Valle, was an Italian composer, musicologist, and author who travelled throughout Asia during the Renaissance period. His travels took him to the Holy Land, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and as far as India. Life Pietro Della Valle was born in Rome on 2 April 1586, to a wealthy and noble family.
