MapQuest (stylized as mapquest) is an American free online web mapping service. It was launched in 1996 as the first commercial web mapping service. MapQuest vies for market share with competitors such as Google Maps and Here. History MapQuest's origins date to 1967 with the founding of Cartographic Services, a division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Chicago, Illinois, which moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1969. In the mid-1980s, R.R. Donnelley & Sons began generating maps and routes for customers, with cooperation by Barry Glick, a University at Buffalo Ph.D. In 1994 it was spun off as GeoSystems Global Corporation. James W. Thomas or Jim Thomas is an American business executive who held key positions at Rivian Automotive and MapQuest. He is known for managing the initial public offering of MapQuest. Early life Thomas graduated from Florida Institute of Technology with a bachelor degree in mathematics in 1972 and received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. Career In 1995, he assisted with the startup of MapQuest. He became the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, and helped MapQuest become a leading internet mapping company. Turn-by-turn Navigation is a feature of some satellite navigation devices where directions for a selected route are continually presented to the user in the form of spoken or visual instructions. The system keeps the user up-to-date about the best route to the destination, and is often updated according to changing factors such as traffic and road conditions. Turn-by-turn systems typically use an electronic voice to inform the user whether to turn left or right, the street name, and the distance to the next turn. OnStar Corporation is a subsidiary of General Motors that provides subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, emergency services, turn-by-turn navigation, and remote diagnostics systems throughout the United States, Canada, China, Mexico, Europe, Brazil, and Argentina. Boost Mobile is an American wireless service provider owned by Dish Wireless. It uses the merged T-Mobile network (Sprint + T-Mobile) and AT&T to deliver wireless services.
