Manny Santos (boxer)
Manoel "Manny" Santos (11 October 1940 – 2 December 2013) was a Tongan-born New Zealand professional lightweight, light/light welterweight Boxing, boxer of the 1960s and 1970s. Early life and family Santos was born in Tonga on 11 October 1940. His father, also called Manoel Santos, had a Portuguese people, Portuguese father and a Tongan mother, and served with the Māori Battalion during World War II. Santos Snr and his family emigrated from Tonga to Auckland, New Zealand, in 1957. Boxing career Santos won the New Zealand Boxing Association lightweight title, the Australasian Light welterweight title, and the List of Commonwealth Boxing Council Champions#lightweight, British Commonwealth lightweight title. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930. The National Boxing Association continued to recognize it until its champion, Barney Ross relinquished the title in 1935 to concentrate on regaining the welterweight championship. Hector Thompson
Hector Thompson ( – ) was an Australian professional boxer who competed in four different weight divisions—lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight—during the 1970s and 80s. Was married to Lynette Slee in 1965/6 unknown divorce date. Professional career In 1973 he beat Joe Tetteh for the Commonwealth (British Empire) Super lightweight title, earning a shot at Roberto Durán in 1973 for the World Boxing Association World lightweight title but lost by technical knockout (TKO). After capturing the Commonwealth title again in 1975, later that year he would go on to challenge Antonio Cervantes for the World Boxing Association World light welterweight title but he lost by RTD. He was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.
