Mandorah, Northern Territory
Mandorah is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its local government area is the Wagait Shire. At the 2016 census, Mandorah had no people living within its boundaries. The locality of Mandorah on the Cox Peninsula, across the harbour from Darwin, is named after "Mandorah", a guest house built in what is now the locality by Allan Hartwig prior to 1948. In 2019 the Northern Territory Government announced it would spend up to $50 million to replace the Mandorah jetty, construct a breakwater to protect it from damage during storms, and construct a boat ramp. The original jetty was built in the 1960s and repaired several times since it was damaged by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. The temporary repairs had posed difficulties for disabled people wanting to use the ferry service. Cyclone Tracy
Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, from 24 to 26 December 1974. The small, developing easterly storm had been observed passing clear of the city initially, but then turned towards it early on 24 December. After 10:00 p.m. ACST, damage became severe, and wind gusts reached before instruments failed. The anemometer in Darwin Airport control tower had its needle bent in half by the strength of the gusts. Residents of Darwin were celebrating Christmas, and did not immediately acknowledge the emergency, partly because they had been alerted to an earlier cyclone ( Selma) that passed west of the city, and did not affect it in any way. Boat Ramp
A slipway, also known as boat ramp or launch or boat deployer, is a ramp on the shore by which ships or boats can be moved to and from the water. They are used for building and repairing ships and boats, and for launching and retrieving small boats on trailers towed by automobiles and flying boats on their undercarriage. A breakwater is a permanent structure constructed at a coastal area to protect against tides, currents, waves, and storm surges. Part of a coastal management system, breakwaters are installed to minimize erosion, and to protect anchorages, helping isolate vessels within them from marine hazards such as prop washes and wind-driven waves. The council was established as the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council on 28 April 1995 and renamed with effect from 1 July 2008. The shire is located west of Darwin, as a 15-minute ferry ride, or a drive on fully sealed roads. The council derived its previous name from the Cox Peninsula. It was named after Matthew Dillon Cox who was regarded as the Northern Territory's first pastoralist, who applied for a lease over the peninsula in 1869, just after the establishment of Darwin. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. __NOTOC__ Cox Peninsula is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located on the Cox Peninsula and adjoining land about south-west of the territorial capital of Darwin. Cox Peninsula consists of land both on the Cox Peninsula and its immediate south and which is located within the cadastral units of the hundreds of Bray and Parsons, but does not included land within the two local government areas established on the peninsula, the Belyuen Shire and Wagait Shire.
