The Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes is a Group One horse race held for Thoroughbred two-year-olds at Awapuni Racecourse in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Run over 1400 metres in late March or early April, for a stake of $225,000 (2021) it, and the Ellerslie Sires Produce Stakes (1200m), are regarded as New Zealand's best two-year-old races. It is currently raced on the same day as the: * Group 2 Awapuni Gold Cup over 2000m for open class horses. * Group 3 Manawatu Classic over 2000m for 3YO horses. * Listed Flying Handicap over 1400m for Open Handicap runners. Awapuni, Palmerston North
Awapuni is an area and council ward of Palmerston North, Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand. It is located south west of Palmerston North Central. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "blocked-up river" for ''Awapuni''. Te Hotu Manawa Marae and its Tūturu Pumau meeting house are located in Awapuni. It is a tribal meeting ground for the Rangitāne hapū of Ngāti Kapuārangi, Ngāti Rangiaranaki, Ngāti Rangitepaia, Ngāti Hineaute and Ngāti Tauira. Lisa Allpress
Lisa Joy Allpress (née Mumby; born 1974 or 1975) is a New Zealand jockey. She was the first female jockey in New Zealand to reach 1000 wins. Allpress was born in 1974 or 1975. She was apprenticed to trainer Kevin Gray at Waverley. Her first race ride was on Miss Molly in a maiden at Matamata on 23 October 2002. She recorded her first win the next day on Rosafe at Wanganui. Her first Group Win was on We Can Say It Now in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on 4 December 2010. , Allpress has also ridden successfully in Singapore (57), Japan (7 wins) and Malaysia (12). Cape Cross (13 March 1994 – 21 April 2017) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. He is a son of the July Cup winner Green Desert and Cheveley Park Stakes, winner Park Appeal who was the Champion two-year-old filly in England and Ireland in 1984. Racing career As a two-year-old Cape Cross raced twice, winning his maiden on the second attempt. His first start as a three-year-old was in the Craven Stakes, where he finished third. This was followed by an eighth place in the 2000 Guineas. He only won once as a three-year-old. He won the Lockinge Stakes as a four-year-old, when starting a 20/1 outsider. Black Minnaloushe
Black Minnaloushe (foaled 5 February 1998) is an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred in Kentucky, he was sold as a yearling and sent to Ireland to race for the Irish-based Coolmore Stud organisation. After winning both his races as a juvenile, he was initially disappointing in the early part of 2001 but then showed marked improvement to win the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. He was beaten in his last four races and was retired to stud at the end of the year. He has had success as a breeding stallion in the United States, New Zealand and South Africa. Noel Harris
Noel Harris, also known as "Harry" or "NGH", is a former jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. He is notable for having ridden 2,167 raceday winners in New Zealand which is the fourth highest total behind Chris Johnson, David Walsh and Lance O'Sullivan and he has won the jockeys' premiership in both New Zealand and Singapore. In 2018 Harris was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Riding career Noel Harris was apprenticed at Woodville to his father, John William (Jock) Harris who was a leading jockey both on the flat and over jumps before becoming a horse trainer. Patrick Hogan (racehorse Breeder)
Sir Patrick Hogan (23 October 1939 – 6 January 2023) was a New Zealand breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses, based in Cambridge. He was closely associated with the champion sires Sir Tristram and Zabeel. Early life and family Hogan was born in Rotorua on 23 October 1939. His mother was Sarah Margaret Hogan ( Small), and his father was Thomas (Tom) Hogan who emigrated from Ballindooley, County Galway, Ireland, in 1914 at the age of 19. He received his education at Hautapu Primary and St. Patrick's College, Silverstream. In 1962, he married Justine Alice Heath, the daughter of William and Phyllis Heath. They have had two daughters. Career Hogan was a partner in the Fencourt Stud from 1965 to 1977, and in 1977 established the Cambridge Stud, with the outstanding sire Sir Tristram. Jimmy Choux (foaled 10 October 2007) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. On 5 March 2011, he won the 136th running of the New Zealand Derby. In doing so, he became the first horse since Surfers Paradise in 1990 to win both the New Zealand 2000 Guineas and the New Zealand Derby. Michael Moroney is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He is notable for having trained Brew to win the 2000 Melbourne Cup and many other Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Choisir (18 September 1999 – 7 December 2021) was an Australian-bred dual hemisphere-winning Thoroughbred racehorse. He became the first Australian-trained winner of the Group Two King's Stand Stakes. The same year, Choisir also won the Golden Jubilee Stakes and was second in the July Cup. Mark Du Plessis (born 3 October 1975, Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) is a horse racing jockey. He was champion apprentice jockey in Zimbabwe in 1994/1995 and the winner of Zimbabwe senior jockeys' championship in 1997/1998. He moved to New Zealand and starting riding in the late 1990s in the North Island. He has won 80 Group and listed races and a current total of 867 victories in New Zealand. Darci Brahma (Danehill-Grand Echezeaux; foaled 21 September 2002) is a New Zealand thoroughbred colt foaled in 2002 at Pencarrow Stud near Cambridge in New Zealand. Trevor McKee
Trevor John McKee (22 September 1937 – 5 April 2019) was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He was best known as the trainer, in partnership with his son Stephen, of the champion racehorse Sunline. Biography McKee was born in the Thames Valley and started his racing career as a jockey. He trained at Takanini and for a while in partnership with Colin Curnow and later in partnership with his son Stephen, before retiring in 2006.
