John Francis Dillon (director)
John Francis Dillon (July 13, 1884 – April 4, 1934) was an American film director and actor of the silent era. He directed 130 films between 1914 and 1934. He also appeared in 74 films between 1914 and 1931. He was born in New York, New York, was a brother of Robert A. Dillon, and died in Los Angeles, California from a heart attack. He was married to the actress Edith Hallor. Early years The future actor was the son of William Albert Hobbes (1841-1909), a Warwickshire solicitor, and his wife, Marion Hobbes, née Dennis, (1838-1925). His schooling came at Trinity College in Straford-on-Avon. Career Hobbes's stage debut was as a member of Frank Benson's company, in the role of Tybalt in ''Romeo and Juliet'' in 1898, playing in Shakespearean rep alongside actors such as Ellen Terry and Mrs Patrick Campbell. Fox Film Corporation
The Fox Film Corporation (also known as Fox Studios) was an American Independent film production studio formed by William Fox (1879–1952) in 1915, by combining his earlier Greater New York Film Rental Company and Box Office Attractions Film Company (founded 1913). The company's first film studios were set up in Fort Lee, New Jersey, but in 1917, William Fox sent Sol M. Wurtzel to Hollywood, California to oversee the studio's new West Coast production facilities, where the climate was more hospitable for filmmaking. On July 23, 1926, the company bought the patents of the Movietone sound system for recording sound onto film. After the Wall Street crash of 1929, William Fox lost control of the company in 1930, during a hostile takeover. Leon Gordon Bennett (January 12, 1894 – January 4, 1960) was an English-born playwright, screenwriter, actor and director best known for writing film ''White Cargo''. Biography Gordon was born in Brighton, England in January 1894 and studied at St. John's College. He became an actor and was a leading man with the Boston Repertory Company. He began writing plays. After directing plays in Australia he joined MGM in 1930. He died of a heart ailment at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, in Los Angeles, California on January 4, 1960.
