Major (Franklin D. Roosevelt's Dog)
Major, a German Shepherd, was a presidential pet belonging to United States president Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1933, while living at the White House, Major had incidents in which he bit United States Senator Hattie Wyatt Caraway and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Ramsay MacDonald. After the latter incident, he was sent to live at Roosevelt's private residence in Hyde Park, New York, and never returned to the White House. Early life Major had originally been a police dog. When Roosevelt was governor of New York, he was gifted to Roosevelt by the New York State Police. A November 1932 article in the ''Brooklyn Eagle'' described Major's personality as "sedate", and described Roosevelt, who had multiple dogs, as being partial towards Major. German Shepherd
The German Shepherd or Alsatian is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. The breed was developed by Max von Stephanitz using various traditional German herding dogs from 1899. It was originally bred as a herding dog, for herding sheep. It has since been used in many other types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police work, and warfare. It is commonly kept as a companion dog, and according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale had the second-highest number of annual registrations in 2013. Major (Joe Biden's Dog)
Major (born January 17, 2018) is a German Shepherd formerly owned by Joe Biden's family. Major, who was born in 2018, is the first shelter dog to live in the White House. Previously, President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie had also owned two German Shepherds. Major was a rescue from a litter that had been exposed to "something toxic" in their home, and their owner was unable to afford the expense of veterinary care for them. He was fostered by the Bidens earlier that year from the Delaware Humane Association's shelter and has been with them since late 2018. On the day Joe Biden adopted the dog from the shelter, he stayed "telling stories and taking selfies with staffers" for over an hour. Jean Adrien Antoine Jules Jusserand (18 February 1855 – 18 July 1932) was a French author and diplomat. Pete was a pet dog belonging to United States president Theodore Roosevelt. He was one of many presidential pets during Roosevelt's presidency. He was reported to be a bull terrier, though other reports have said he was a Boston bull terrier or bulldog. Pete was reported to be Theodore Roosevelt's favorite of his dogs. Pete chased and bit a number people on numerous occasions during his time living at the White House. He bit policemen on a number of occasions. The Bull Terrier is a breed of dog in the terrier family. There is also a miniature version of this breed which is officially known as the Miniature Bull Terrier.
