Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). As a lawyer, he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857, he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. In 1864, when no party proved capable of governing for long, Macdonald agreed to a proposal from his political rival, George Brown, that the parties unite in a Great Coalition to seek federation and political reform. Stuart Petre Brodie Mais (4 July 1885 – 21 April 1975), known publicly as S. P. B. Mais, was a British author, journalist and broadcaster. He was an author of travel books and guides, and had an informal style that made him popular with the general public. Roger Mais (; 11 August 1905 – 21 June 1955) was a Jamaican journalist, novelist, poet, and playwright. He was born to a middle-class family in Kingston, Jamaica. Mais Abdel-Jabbar Hamdan Selim ( ar, ميس عبد الجبار حمدان سليم, born October 31, 1982), better known as Mais Hamdan ( ar, ميس حمدان), is a Jordanian actress, singer and TV presenter. Her sisters are Mai Selim and Dana Hamdan. Early life Mais Hamdan was born in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to a Jordanian father of Palestinian descent, and a Jordanian- Lebanese mother. ''Mais'' is an album by Brazilian singer Marisa Monte, released in 1991. By the time of the album's release, newspaper ''O Estado de S. Paulo'' praised the album, saying Monte was "less dramatic, with her voice even more tuned and crystalline, which seemed impossible, Monte even commoves. And, definitely, enters the pantheon of the titans, in all senses." Mayıs () is a village in the Lachin District of Azerbaijan. History The village was located in the Armenian-occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, coming under the control of ethnic Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s. The village subsequently became part of the breakaway Republic of Artsakh as part of its Kashatagh Province Kashatagh Province ( hy, Քաշաթաղի շրջան) was a province of the Republic of Artsakh. Maia, or Mais, (with the modern name of Bowness-on-Solway) in Cumbria, England was a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall, and was the last (or first) fort at the western end of the Wall, overlooking the Solway Firth. Name The ''Ravenna Cosmography'' gives the name of the fort as ''Maia'', and the Rudge Cup, the Amiens Skillet and the Staffordshire Moorlands Pan give the name as ''Mais''. Another name ''Maio'' appears a little earlier in the ''Ravenna Cosmography'' which may well be the same fort. The fort is not mentioned in the '' Notitia Dignitatum''. The name ''Maia'' means "The Larger". The fort was (by a small margin) the second largest fort on Hadrian's Wall. The largest fort was Uxelodunum, not far distant in Stanwix in Carlisle.
