Mathghamhain mac Cian was an Eóganacht Raithlind nobleman and maternal grandson of Brian Boru. He was the son of Cian mac Máelmuaid and his wife Sadhbh, who was a daughter of the High Kings of Ireland, High King Brian Boru. He died at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 fighting for the Brian Boru, High King. Mathghamhain's descendants eventually became sovereigns over territory in west County Cork, Cork, notably around the Iveragh Peninsula and the town of Bandon, County Cork, Bandon. Dennis Aloysius Mahony (January 20, 1821 in Rosscarbery, County Cork, Ireland – November 6, 1879) was one of the founders of the Dubuque ''Herald'' (now the ''Telegraph Herald''), a newspaper in Dubuque, Iowa, during the American Civil War.
