Mahjong is a strategy-based tile game developed during the Qing dynasty in China. It has since spread worldwide. The game has a long history and significance in many countries, particularly in Asia. Places like China and Japan have especially strong cultural ties to the game. In China, the game has evolved to represent peace and friendship. Mahjong
Mahjong or mah-jongg (English pronunciation: ) is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Qing Dynasty
The Qing dynasty ( ), officially the Great Qing,, was a Manchu-led imperial dynasty of China and the last orthodox dynasty in Chinese history. It emerged from the Later Jin dynasty founded by the Jianzhou Jurchens, a Tungusic-speaking ethnic group who unified other Jurchen tribes to form a new "Manchu" ethnic identity. The dynasty was officially proclaimed in 1636 in Manchuria (modern-day Northeast China and Outer Manchuria). A mahjong school is a licensed venue in Hong Kong where people over the age of 18 can play mahjong. Since 1871 privately run gambling businesses have been banned in Hong Kong; however mahjong-hosting venues have been tolerated by the Hong Kong government. After World War II the government has required such venues to obtain ''Mahjong/ Tin Kau Licences'' with the constraint that such businesses must be known, in Legal English, as ''Mahjong Schools'' - a white lie to get around the ban on privately run gambling businesses.
