Mahalia Cassidy
Mahalia Cassidy (born 9 October 1995) is an Australian netball player in the Suncorp Super Netball league, playing for the Sunshine Coast Lightning. Cassidy made her debut at the elite level in the ANZ Championship, playing for the Firebirds as a temporary replacement player for several games in the 2015 season. She joined the Firebirds permanently the following year and played six matches, culminating in a premiership title in 2016. However, she suffered a serious knee injury that kept her out of the entire 2017 season. She returned to the team the following year and featured in the Firebirds' mid-court. Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. The 2021 Suncorp Super Netball season was the fifth season of the premier netball league in Australia. The season commenced on 1 May and concluded on 28 August. The defending premiers were the Melbourne Vixens, but they failed to make the finals. The New South Wales Swifts won their second championship in three years, after defeating Giants Netball by 63–59 in the Grand Final.
