Mack McFarland
Mack McFarland is a curator and artist living in Portland, Oregon. He is the Director of Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at Pacific Northwest College of Art. As the curator for PNCA, McFarland has worked with several Tactical media artists, including The Yes Men, Critical Art Ensemble, Brian Holmes and Eva & Franco Mattes. McFarland's other projects with PNCA include solo exhibitions with Luc Tuymans, Wangechi Mutu, Joe Sacco, Cauleen Smith, Sandow Birk, James Rosenquist, David Horvitz, Sue Coe, Thomas Zummer, and many others. His work focuses on issues of class, representation, information environments, and phenomenological perception. Sandow Birk
Sandow Birk (born 1962 in Detroit) is an American visual artist from Los Angeles whose work deals mainly with contemporary American culture. Seven books have been published on his works and he has made two films. With an emphasis on social issues, his frequent themes have included inner city violence, graffiti, various political issues, travel, prisons, surfing and skateboarding. His projects are often elaborate and epic in scale, including a series on "The Leading Causes of Death in America" and the invasion and the second war in Iraq. He completed a hand-made illuminated manuscript version of the Qur'an, transcribing the English language text by hand in a personalized font based on graffiti, and illuminating the pages with scenes of contemporary American life. The Time-Based Art Festival (TBA) is an annual interdisciplinary art and performance festival presented each September in Portland, Oregon by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA). History TBA is modeled on similar European and Australian Festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh and Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Festivals. The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) is a contemporary performance and visual arts organization in Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. PICA was founded in 1995 by Kristy Edmunds. Dennis Nyback
Dennis Nyback (July 30, 1953 – October 2, 2022) was an American independent film archivist, found footage (appropriation), found footage filmmaker, historian and writer. Nyback operated the Dennis Nyback Film Archive, which has over 13,000 short films, from 1895 onward, mostly in 16 mm film, 16mm. It is located in Portland, Oregon. Working from his archive he created over 300 found footage film programs that he showed extensively in Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavia and the United States He was a guest at film festivals in: Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, and other countries. He owned and operated movie theaters in Seattle, New York and Portland, Oregon. Sue Coe
Sue Coe (born 1951) is an English artist and illustrator working primarily in drawing, printmaking, and in the form of illustrated books and comics. Her work is in the tradition of social protest art and is highly political. Coe's work often includes animal rights commentary, though she also creates work that centralizes the rights of marginalized peoples and criticizes capitalism. Her commentary on political events and social injustice are published in newspapers, magazines and books. Her work has been shown internationally in both solo and group exhibitions and has been collected by various international museums. She lives in Upstate New York. David Horvitz
David Horvitz (born 1982) is an American artist who uses art books, photography, performance art, and mail art as media for his work. He is known for his work in the virtual sphere. Horvitz is a graduate from Bard College. Career Horvitz uses art books, photography, performance art, watercolor, and mail art as mediums for his work. The 1970s conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader has been an important influence on Horvitz's art. Horvitz's movie “Rarely Seen Bas Jan Ader Film”, for example, shows a silent black and white clip a few seconds long of a man riding a bicycle into the sea. This evokes the imagery of Ader's works around the theme of falling and the myth surrounding Ader's disappearance at sea. James Rosenquist
James Rosenquist (November 29, 1933 – March 31, 2017) was an American artist and one of the proponents of the pop art movement. Drawing from his background working in sign painting, Rosenquist's pieces often explored the role of advertising and consumer culture in art and society, utilizing techniques he learned making commercial art to depict popular cultural icons and mundane everyday objects. While his works have often been compared to those from other key figures of the pop art movement, such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Rosenquist's pieces were unique in the way that they often employed elements of surrealism using fragments of advertisements and cultural imagery to emphasize the overwhelming nature of ads. Cauleen Smith (born September 25, 1967) is an American born filmmaker and multimedia artist. She is best known for her experimental works that address the African-American identity, specifically the issues facing black women today. Smith is best known for her feature film ''Drylongso''. Smith currently teaches in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts. Education In 1991 Smith completed her B.A in Cinema at San Francisco State University. While a student there, she completed several films, two of which received a lot of attention: ''Daily Rains'', which was completed in 1990, and ''Chronicles of a Lying Spirit by Kelly Gabron'', which was fully completed in 1993.
