Macalester College () is a private liberal arts college in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Founded in 1874, Macalester is exclusively an undergraduate four-year institution and enrolled 2,174 students in the fall of 2018 from 50 U.S. states, four U.S territories, the District of Columbia and 97 countries. The college has Scottish roots and emphasizes internationalism and multiculturalism. History Macalester College was founded by Rev. Dr. Edward Duffield Neill in 1874 with help from the Presbyterian Church in Minnesota. Neill had served as a chaplain in the Civil War and traveled to Minnesota Territory in 1849. He became connected politically and socially. He went on to found two local churches, was appointed the first Chancellor of the University of Minnesota, and became the state's first superintendent of public education. Mount Macalester
Mount Macalester () is a prominent peak rising to in the central part of the Soholt Peaks, Heritage Range, Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs from 1961 to 1966. The peak was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Macalester College, the alma mater of Gerald F. Webers, the leader of the United States Antarctic Research Program Ellsworth Mountains Expedition of 1979–80. It was first climbed on December 28, 2013, by Ralf Laier, Pachi Ibarra and Seth Timpano in Alpine style during their traverse of the Soholt Peaks. Charles Macalester
Charles Macalester (February 17, 1798 – December 9, 1873) was an American businessman, banker and philanthropist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as a government director for the Second Bank of the United States and an advisor and friend to several U.S. presidents. His brokerage and financing activities made him one of the wealthiest people in the United States at the time. He bequested a former hotel property to a failing Presbyterian secondary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota that became Macalester College and was named in his honor. His Glengarry estate in the Torresdale neighborhood of Philadelphia was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Charles Somerville MacAlester
Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Somerville MacAlester of Loup and Kennox (1797–1891) was a son of Charles MacAlester and Janet Somerville. He was born in Scotland in 1797 and was a chief of Clan MacAlister. Biography Born 15 September 1797, the eldest son of Charles MacAlester and Janet Somerville, daughter of William Somerville of Kennox and Lilian Porterfield, daughter of Gabriel Porterfield of Hapland. Charles married Mary Adeline Brabazon Lyon, a daughter of Captain Edward Lyon and Anna Catherine Wynstanley, in January 1828. He became Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire, a Justice of the Peace of Ayrshire and gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Ayr and Wigton Militia. In 1846 Charles MacAlester of Loup and Kennox, was granted the right to take up Arms as Chief of Clan MacAlister, by the Lyon Court. He died on 6 January 1891 and is buried in Warriston Cemetery.
