Thomas Maclear
Sir Thomas Maclear (17 March 1794 – 14 July 1879) was an Irish-born South African astronomer who became Her Majesty's astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope. Life He was born in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, Ireland, the eldest son of Rev James Maclear and Mary Magrath. In 1808 he was sent to England to be educated in the medical profession. After passing his examinations, in 1815 he was accepted into the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He then worked as house-surgeon in the Bedford Infirmary. In 1823 he went into partnership with his uncle at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Two years later in 1825 he was married to Mary Pearse, the daughter of Theed Pearse, Clerk of the Peace for the county of Bedford. Maclear had a keen interest in amateur astronomy, and would begin a long association with the Royal Astronomical Society, to which he would be named a Fellow. Michael Maclear, OC (1929 – December 25, 2018) was an award-winning Anglo-Canadian journalist, documentary filmmaker, and former correspondent for various CBC programs and for CTV's '' W5''. He is the great-great-grand-nephew of South African astronomer Sir Thomas Maclear. Born in London, UK in 1929, Maclear moved to Canada in 1954 and joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation the next year. As a foreign correspondent for CBC (1961–1971) and the CTV Television Network, he travelled to more than 80 countries.* . George Maclear
George Frederick Maclear (b.3 Feb 1833 in Bedford; d. 19 Oct 1902 at St Augustine's College, Canterbury) was an English clergyman, theological writer and headmaster at King's College School, London (later Wimbledon). He was the eldest son of the Rev. George Maclear, MA, chaplain of Bedford county prison (1832–69), by his wife Isabella Ingle. Educated at Bedford School, he obtained a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1852, receiving a BA degree in 1855, followed by a distinguished academic career. He was the nephew of Thomas Maclear, Her Majesty's Astronomer at Cape Town, and cousin to John Maclear, admiral in the Royal Navy, and Basil Maclear. Career Maclear won the Carus Greek Testament prize in 1854 and 1855, and after graduating BA with a second class in the classical tripos of 1855, he was placed in the first class in the theological tripos of 1856 (its first year). John Maclear
John Fiot Lee Pearse Maclear (27 June 1838 in Cape Town – 17 July 1907 in Niagara) was an admiral in the Royal Navy, known for his leadership in hydrography. He is best known for being commander of during the ''Challenger'' Expedition (1872–1876) under its commission captain, Sir George Nares, for the voyage of scientific discovery in which the ship went round the world. This expedition led to the science of oceanography, after which various ocean features are named, including the Challenger Plateau near New Zealand. During this expedition the Maclear's Rat on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean was named after him. He is also honoured in the specific epithet of '' Dicliptera maclearii'', a plant in the family Acanthaceae which is endemic to Christmas Island. Nqanqarhu (formerly Maclear) is a small town situated in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, near the Mooi River (a tributary of the Tsitsa River), north of East London and northeast of Elliot. It was founded in 1876 as a military camp, called ''Nqanqaru Drift'' and developed rapidly, reaching municipal status in 1916. It is named after Sir Thomas Maclear (1794-1879), a famous astronomer who laid the foundation for a trigonometrical survey of the Cape Colony. It lies just north-east of Ugie. Maclear (crater)
Maclear is a lava-flooded crater on the northwest part of the Mare Tranquillitatis, a lunar mare in the eastern half of the Moon. Its diameter is 20 km. The crater is located to the southwest of the slightly larger Ross. To the southwest of Maclear is Sosigenes, while farther to the south-southeast is Arago. With most of its interior submerged in deposits of basaltic lava, all that remains of this crater is a narrow rim projecting above the surrounding mare. The rim is not quite circular, having a flat outward bulge along the western side. But the rim is relatively uniform in width and is not significantly eroded. The crater rim lies at the southern terminus of a rille belonging to a system that runs along the western edges of Mare Tranquillitatis. The rille system to the north of the crater is designated Rimae Maclear, while the rilles to the south-southwest are named Rimae Sosigenes.
