MPs Elected In The Ghanaian Parliamentary Election, 2016
The election of Members of Parliament (MPs) to the 7th Parliament of the Fourth Republic was held on 7 December 2016. The Speaker is not an elected member of parliament though he/she is qualified to stand for election as such. There are a total of 275 constituencies in Ghana. 45 new constituencies were created prior to the 2012 election. The 7th Parliament had its first sitting on Sunday 7 January 2017 shortly after midnight to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speakers as well as for the administration of oaths to the Speaker and Members of Parliament. 2016 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2016 to elect a President of Ghana, President and all 275 Members of Parliament of Ghana, Parliament. They had originally been scheduled for 7 November 2016, but the date was later rejected by Parliament. Former foreign minister Nana Akufo-Addo of the opposition New Patriotic Party was elected President on his third attempt, defeating incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (Ghana), National Democratic Congress. The election results were announced on 9 December 2016 due to a delay of voting in two areas. At 19:51 local time, Mahama called Akufo-Addo to concede defeat. At 20:45, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Electoral Commission declared that Akufo-Addo had defeated Mahama in a single round. It was the first time in Ghana's history that a sitting president had been defeated for reelection. Savannah Region - 7 Seats
A savanna or savannah is a mixed woodland-grassland (i.e. grassy woodland) biome and ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. Robert Sarfo-Mensah a Ghanaian politician and member of the Fifth and Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana representing Asunafo North in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. Early life and education He was born on 1 April 1970. He hails from Mampong in Ashanti region. He had his Executive Master's at GIMPA in 2008. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at University of Ghana in 1996. Employment Sarfo-Mensah is a farmer/agriculturist. He has worked as an Assistant Revenue Officer of VAT Service. He has thus worked as a Public Servant, specifically Tax Officer. In 2017, he also served as the Director-General of the National Sports Authority of Ghana after his appointment by then president Nana Akuffo Addo. Evans Bobie Opoku is a Ghanaian politician who served as a member of the Seventh Parliament and Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana representing the Asunafo North Constituency in the Ahafo Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party. In 2021, Nana Akufo-Addo appointed and swore him in as the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports. Early life and education Evans Bobie Opoku was born on 1 December 1974 and hails from Dadiesoaba in the Ahafo region.He completed his BECE in 1990 and his SSSCE in 1993 at Gyamfi Kumanin senior High school/ Ahafoman senior High Technical school. Asunafo North (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
Asunafo North is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana and also one of the six constituencies in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Evans Opoku Bobie was voted and elected in the 2020 general election as the Member of Parliament for the constituency form the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Winning the election with a total of 34,684 votes (52.21%) of the total votes cast beating his rival Mohammed Haruna of the National Democratic Party (NDC). The constituency is seen as one of the stronghold for the New Patroitic Party where they have won the last five general election held in the country. However, in the 2024 Ghanaian general election, Mohammed Haruna of the National Democratic Congress (Ghana) won the elections with 34,083 votes beating New Patriotic Party's Evans Bobie Opoku who polled 25,101 votes. By-elections
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, or a bypoll in India, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent’s death or resignation, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities.
