Several companies, most prominently the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), operate a number of bus routes in Manhattan, New York, United States. New York And Harlem Railroad
The New York and Harlem Railroad (now the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line) was one of the first railroads in the United States, and was the world's first street railway. Designed by John Stephenson, it was opened in stages between 1832 and 1852 between Lower Manhattan to and beyond Harlem. Horses initially pulled railway carriages, followed by a conversion to steam engines, then on to battery-powered Julien electric traction cars. In 1907, the then leaseholders of the line, New York City Railway, a streetcar operator, went into receivership. Following a further receivership in 1932, the New York Railways Corporation converted the line to bus operation. The Murray Hill Tunnel now carries a lane of road traffic, but not the buses. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates 80 express bus routes in New York City, United States. Generally, express routes operated by MTA Bus Company are assigned multi-borough (BM, BxM, QM, SIM) prefixes. Exceptions to this rule are 7 Brooklyn and Queens express routes operated by MTA New York City Transit. Those routes use an X prefix. The unidirectional fare, payable with MetroCard or OMNY, a contactless payment system which will replace the Metrocard by 2023, is $6.75. Discount fare media is available. Except for the ad hoc X80 service, coins are not accepted on express buses; only a MetroCard (for now) or OMNY is accepted. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates a number of bus routes in Brooklyn, New York, United States; one minor route is privately operated under a city franchise. Many of them are the direct descendants of streetcar lines (see list of streetcar lines in Brooklyn); the ones that started out as bus routes were almost all operated by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation, a subsidiary of the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation, until the New York City Board of Transportation took over on June 5, 1940. Second Avenue Railroad
The Second Avenue Railroad was a street railway company in Manhattan, New York City, United States. Its lines included the Second Avenue Line. The line ran from Peck Slip in Lower Manhattan to the Harlem River. It included branches to the 92nd Street Ferry along the 86th Street Crosstown Line and through 59th Street and First Avenue at the First Avenue Line. Between 1898 and 1908, it was leased by the Metropolitan Street Railway. The East Side Omnibus Corporation replaced the Second Avenue Line with the M15 bus route and the First Avenue Line with the M13 bus route on First Avenue on June 26, 1933.
