M. Karagatsis
M. Karagatsis ( el, Μ. Καραγάτσης; 23 June 1908 – 14 September 1960) was the pen name of the important modern Greek novelist, journalist, critic and playwright Dimitrios Rodopoulos (Δημήτριος Ροδόπουλος). The pen name M. Karagatsis is the name the novelist is known with. The letter "M." comes from Mitya, which is the Russian diminutive of Dimitris (his real name). The word "Karagatsis" comes from the tree '' karagatsi'' under the shadow of which he used to write as a young writer. Karagatsis was born in Athens, grew up in Larissa and Thessaloniki, and studied law in France. He died in Athens. The Generation of the '30s () was a group of Greek writers, poets, artists, intellectuals, critics, and scholars who made their debut in the 1930s and introduced modernism in Greek art and literature. The Generation of the '30s is also cited as a social movement. The previous Medieval and post-Byzantine Greek eras, which glorified religion, Jesus, and the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, were rejected by modernism. Elements of surrealism and utopianism were introduced in efforts to renew contemporary literature. Most notable among the Generation of the ‘30s is Giorgos Seferis, a Greek poet of the 20th century who instigated the turning point into modernity with surrealism in his poetry. After the Balkan Wars and the disastrous Greco-Turkish War of 1922, literature could no longer boast nationalistic aspirations of the previous generation. ''The 10'' is an unfinished novel written by M. Karagatsis. The novel was written in 1960 and was the last novel of M. Karagatsis. Although it was unfinished, the novel was released in 1964 by Estia Publications, four years after the death of Karagatsis. Since then, the novel has many new publications. ''The 10'' was adapted for TV series by the director Pigi Dimitrakopoulou, in 2007. The adapted screenplay was written by Stavros Kalafatidis, Mary Zafeiropoulou and Giorgos Kritikos.
