M. K. Indira
Mandagadde Krishnarao Indira ( kn, ಮಂಡಗದ್ದೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾವ್ ಇಂದಿರ; 5 January 1917 – 15 March 1994) was a well-known Indian novelist in the Kannada language. Her works include ''Phaniyamma'', which won various awards. She began writing novels at the age of forty-five.Susie J. Tharu, Ke Lalita (1991), p138 Some of her novels were made into movies. Early life and education Indira was born on 5 January 1917 to T. Suryanarayana Rao, a prosperous agriculturist and Banashankaramma in Thirthahalli, in the Kingdom of Mysore of British India. Her native village was Narasimharajapura in Chikmagalur district. Her formal education lasted for seven years, before she married at age twelve to M. Krishna Rao. Thirthahalli is a panchayat town located in the Shimoga district of the state of Karnataka, India. ''Phaniyamma'' is a 1983 Indian Kannada award-winning drama film directed and produced by Prema Karanth. The story is based on acclaimed novelist M. K. Indira's 1977 Sahitya Academy Award-winning novel of the same name. The film highlighted the plight of a widow and her struggle for survival. The film's cast included many players from a theatrical background including L. V. Sharadha, Prathibha Kasaravalli, Archana Rao, Vishwanath Rao and Kasaragod Chinna. Actor Ananth Nag made a guest appearance in the film. The film was widely appreciated by critics and audience upon release. ''Poorvapara'' () is a 2004 Indian Kannada-language drama film directed by Kudavalli Chandrashekhar in his directorial debut. The film stars Geetha, Naveen Mayur and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy with Srinath and himself in supporting roles. The film is based on M. K. Indira's novel of the same name and is about the conflict that NRIs face about the separation from their loved ones. The film follows a sixty-year old mother from Sringeri who goes to the United States with the intention of bringing her son and daughter-in-law back to India.
