M. Gweneth Humphreys Award
The M. Gweneth Humphreys Award or Humphreys Award is a mathematics award established by the Association for Women in Mathematics in recognition of mathematics educators who have exhibited outstanding mentorship. The award is named for Mabel Gweneth Humphreys (1911-2006) who earned her Ph.D. at age 23 from the University of Chicago in 1935. She taught mathematics to women for her entire career, first at Mount St. Scholastica College, then for several years at Sophie Newcomb College, and finally for over thirty years at Randolph Macon Woman's College. This award, funded by contributions from her former students and colleagues at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, recognizes her commitment to and her influence on undergraduate students of mathematics. Association For Women In Mathematics
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is a professional society whose mission is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity for and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences. The AWM was founded in 1971 and incorporated in the state of Massachusetts. AWM has approximately 5200 members, including over 250 institutional members, such as colleges, universities, institutes, and mathematical societies. It offers numerous programs and workshops to mentor women and girls in the mathematical sciences. Much of AWM's work is supported through federal grants. Erica Flapan (born August 14, 1956) is an American mathematician, the Lingurn H. Burkhead Professor of Mathematics at Pomona College. Deanna Haunsperger
Deanna Haunsperger is an American mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at Carleton College. She was the president of the Mathematical Association of America for the 2017–2018 term. She co-created and co-organized the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Women, which ran every summer from 1995 to 2014. Education Haunsperger received her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and computer science from Simpson College in 1986. William "Bill" Yslas Vélez is an American mathematician, a current Emeritus Professor at the University of Arizona, and an Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. From 1992–96, Vélez served as the president of Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). At the University of Arizona he graduated with B.Sc. in 1968, M.Sc. in 1972, and Ph.D. in 1975. His doctoral thesis was written under the supervision of H. B. Mann. Ruth Haas
Ruth Haas is an American mathematician and professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Previously she was the Achilles Professor of Mathematics at Smith College. She received the M. Gweneth Humphreys Award from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) in 2015 for her mentorship of women in mathematics. Haas was named an inaugural AWM Fellow in 2017. Naomi G. Jochnowitz is an American mathematician interested in algebraic number theory. She is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Rochester. Jochnowitz earned her Ph.D. in 1976 from Harvard University. Her dissertation, ''Congruences Between Modular Forms and Implications for the Hecke Algebra'', was supervised by Barry Mazur. Suzanne Weekes
Suzanne L. Weekes is the Executive Director of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She is also Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She is a co-founder of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program. Education Weekes is Caribbean-American, and was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago.
