''Lōc-ed After Dark'' is the debut studio album by American rapper Tone Lōc. It was released on January 23, 1989 via Delicious Vinyl. Production was handled by Matt Dike, Michael Ross and The Dust Brothers. The album reached the number-one spot on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It featured three singles: " Wild Thing", "Funky Cold Medina", and " I Got It Goin' On". Funky Cold Medina
"Funky Cold Medina" is a hip hop song written by Young MC, Matt Dike and Michael Ross, and first performed by American rapper, actor and producer Tone Lōc. It was the second single from Lōc's debut album, '' Lōc-ed After Dark'' (1989). The single was released on March 18, 1989, and rose to number three on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 the following month where it went platinum, selling over one million copies and becoming the second ever platinum-certified rap single (after '' Wild Thing'' from the same album being the first). It peaked on the UK Singles Chart at number 13 in May of that year. According to Flavor Flav, who is heard using the phrase "cold medina" a year earlier on ''It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back'', "cold medina" was one of his assertive affirmations throughout the 1980s and was adopted by labelmates Beastie Boys as a nickname for the cocktail known as a " fuzzy navel"; Flav allegedly later advised Tone Loc to use the catchphrase in a song. Anthony Terrell Smith (born March 3, 1966), better known by his stage name Tone Lōc (), is an American rapper, actor, and producer. He is known for his raspy voice, his hit songs " Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina", for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award, and for being featured in "We're All in the Same Gang", a collaborative single by the West Coast Rap All-Stars. Early life Anthony Terrell Smith was born March 3, 1966, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Margaret, who managed a retirement home, and James Smith. His father died in 1972, and Tony and his three older brothers were raised by his mother. He was educated at the Hollywood Professional School. As a teenager he performed with the Triple A rap group. ''A New Perspective'' is a 1964 studio album by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. It was released on the Blue Note label as BLP 4124 and BST 84124. In 2017, it was ranked at number 194 on ''Pitchfork''s list of the "200 Best Albums of the 1960s". The album was remastered by Rudy Van Gelder in 1998. Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was one of the few hard bop musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist.
