Léonie Rouzade
Léonie Rouzade, born Louise-Léonie Camusat (1839–1916) was a French feminist, politician, journalist and author. An active supporter of women's rights, in 1880 together with Eugénie Pierre, she founded the ''Union des femmes'', the first socialist women's association in France. As a writer, in 1872 she published two novels: ''Le Monde renversé'' (''The World Turned Upside Down'') and ''Voyage de Théodose à l'île de l'Utopie'' (''A Voyage to the Isle of Utopia''). Biography Born on 6 September 1839 in Paris, Louise-Léonie Camusat was the daughter of a watchmaker. In 1860, after working as an embroiderer, she married Auguste Rouzade, an accountant in Meudon where they settled. Encouraged by her husband, she spent her spare time promoting the cause of working-class women by writing two feminist novels: ''Voyage de Théodose à l'île de l'Utopie'' and ''Le Monde renversé''. Feminism in France is the history of feminist thought and movements in France. Feminism in France can be roughly divided into three waves: First-wave feminism from the French Revolution through the Third Republic which was concerned chiefly with suffrage and civic rights for women. Significant contributions came from revolutionary movements of the French Revolution of 1848 and Paris Commune, culminating in 1944 when women gained the right to vote. Second-wave feminism began in the 1940s as a reevaluation of women's role in society, reconciling the inferior treatment of women in society despite their ostensibly equal political status to men. Eugénie Potonié-Pierre
Eugénie Potonié-Pierre (1844–1898 Paris) was a French feminist who founded the Federation of French Feminist Societies in 1892. She joined the Society for the Amelioration of Women's Condition with Léon Richer and Maria Deraismes in the 1870s. She served as the secretary and wrote for the organization's publication '' Le Droit des femmes (Women's Rights)''. In 1880, with Léonie Rouzade, she founded Union des Femmes. She was secretary of the committee of the International Congress for Women's Rights, in 1892, and 1896. In her speech to the International Congress of 1896 in Berlin, Potonié-Pierre credited herself and French feminist peers with coining the term ''féminisme''.
